Is it a 'go as high as you canw/o pinging' type of thing or is 14* the perfect setting. I currently have mine at 17* and it doesn't ping but I'm running 93 octane. Can I get away with running 87 or 89 cause 93 is expensive?

Thanks

Search

And you can try running 89 but it will probably ping if you keep the timing up so high.

For years, sbf's have produced the most power with
a total advance of 36 degrees + or - a bit

While that is proven for WOT

What about cruising around town

Optimum values can go as high as mid 40's

This goes to show why you will never find that ..........
"Perfect Dizzy Setting" you seek

How does Ford obtain the best of both worlds simultaneously
Spark Table in the pcm

It uses Load and RPM to determine best spark for cruise and wot

Lets use WOT for an example
It uses basically the value of 10 at the dizzy
and
It adds 16 more for a total of 26 at max load and max rpm

Why do we get more power when we dizzy twist
Remember the little statement about 36 degrees

Here is where the rub comes in with dizzy twisting

We spark it up for max power
and
it works

We then quickly see the ping thing
because the dizzy twist thing
has thrown off the optimum range for cruise

As with a lot the things
It depends
or
One good thing can hose up another

Its all about ......... Compromise
and
Knowledge gives one the ability to Compromise the least

Hope I splained it good enough to make sense
if not
ask more and maybe others can ............ clean up my mess

I understand. I just gotta play with it, if it don't ping, then it's ok. Thanks Grady, very helpful info.

Couldn't have said it better than the guru.

For instance, I get pinging in high gear, low RPM, low load (a time when Grady noted TT to be over 40*). I do alright otherwise. So I simply had to 'tune' (as well as a caveman can) for the worst case scenario regaring pinging (I could use more at WOT but don't as a compromise).

In my mind, as Grady has pointed out so many times, it comes down what what us old guys think of as a crappy timing curve (thinking about TT for all conditions with this load-based processor). You could say that our timing curves are not optimal (they're ok up top sometimes, but suck in the midrange).

Wait a minute Mr Nacho. Dont you run a fox processor? If so, forget some of that load-based stuff. For the most part, you can time it for WOT ping (that be how I do it on the fox, at least).

Good luck bud.

Thank You Sir

Your Kind to say those things
The Smilies are just sitting there to the right ... begging to be used

As for the knowledge

If you pick up a bit every day .........
It can be accumulated over time I reckon
then again ....
When you get old as me
you start to find out you can't recall none of it

The info on how the pcm manipulates spark and fuel

Peeps come to me with an attitude of like ....
Its some kind of Black Magic

It's Not

The basic operation can be learned fairly easily

The more challenging stuff can be learned a bit at a time ....
You know! ... Like the old story of ... How do you eat an Elephant?
One Bite At A Time

Hey ... I encourage em to try and learn just the basics
I put basic simple stuff up on a site
I put simple stuff up here

I don't know

If they think its all a bunch of Dark Secrets
or
Some kind of Monumental task to learn it

I guess they are a bit in the "Dark" ... when they think ............
I've done something they consider to be Smart

If you think about it

Its really no different than learning how to
put parts together that will give your Stang more "get up and go"
