Ok here's my dillema, the motor in my car on its way to being rebuilt. I'm just waiting for parts. Now heres the thing, I'm gonna be driving about 2 hrs a day for work I need to get some decent gas millage with minimal time required to acheive this. Currently the car has a c4, I have access a trade for a t5 for the c4 or I can pickup a rebuilt AOD cheap..... Any Ideas? If I am gonna be doing the t5 conversion I need to dispel a ruhmour. That Ruhmour is that the aod crossmember will NOT work with the T5.

I'm just looking for Ideas or directions on the t5 swap. I did a search but not much info relevant came up...... I dunno anyhow yeah please advice with reasons would be greatly appreciated!

if you want gas mileage it's the T5 or AOD. After that it comes down to whether you wanna bang the gears or just cruise.

T5 or stick with the C4. I would only use an AOD as a boat anchor.

if he's driving two hours it sure will. an overdrive to keep the revs down, especially on the freeway WILL improve gas mileage.

I checked out that link and it says the cross memeber needs to be changed but then on
http://aod-to-t5.tripod.com/index3.html

they say it doesn't? hmmmmmm
Yeah I'm gonna be averaging 80-100kph for most of the way there....... I know alot of the oldervehicles only had 3 speeds and the millage wasn't all that bad, thats why I'm curious lol.

AOD = junk and that's all there is to that. If you want a decent overdrive trans and it has to be auto use the gm 700r4 10x the tranny the aod is. But the t5 will be more fun for sure, and yes you can use an aod cross member with a t5, I did.

Did you have to move the crossmember or anything?

That's because all of the older vehicles with non over-drive trannies had freeway gears like 2.73's or 3.00's as opposed to 3.73's or 4.10's. If you've still got stock gears out back (3.08's or 3.27's), then I'd keep the c-4 honestly.

Yeah I would recommend that over anything. I'm getting mine this summer, but if you want to stay in budget then for a manual use a t5 and for an auto use a c4.

umm yeah AODs are real junk being Lentech can make them a take 700hp all day long, sounds like real crap to me. all it takes is some tweaking to it and they are a good tranny.

You'd get better mileage with a manual as the AOD type trans do soak up a good bit of power just to turn them.

AOD's can be easily built to take quite a bit of power, but stock they won't take a whole lot of abuse. On easy/normal driving, though, I've had 2 of them last over 200k.

A very stout totally stock AOD type trans is the 99-up 4R70W from behind a 4.2 V6 which will bolt right up to your Windsor. They're good for up to 450 hp, but they take a stand alone electronic control for $400 plus, probly, an aftermarket converter, so gets a little spendy when all is said and done.
