umm yeah AODs are real junk being Lentech can make them a take 700hp all day long, sounds like real crap to me. all it takes is some tweaking to it and they are a good tranny.

LMAO have you ever seen the inside of one??? The lock up rod is seriously a toothpick They bend break snap tear whatever at the first sign of torque. I went through 3 of those heaps before i smartened up and got something good. But don't get me wrong if you like 400 pound trannies and never actually intend to use the overdrive feature and spend a couple grand, they can work ok.

well i have a pretty stout engine combo and run a c4 with 4.10 gears and 26 inch or 28 inch tires depending on what im doing or racing.
i drive around an hour to and from work every day and ive dealt with it our cars will use gas regardless .
if i do anything im going to go 5speed or get a blower and put some 3.27 gears out back,
Brian

That's why you put a 1 piece input shaft in it. If you broke 3 of them, you did something wrong.... 3 times. They're tough if build right. The T5 isn't exactly a bomb proof tranny either and the C4 is not much stronger than the AOD as delivered. But the C4 can be built to take ungodly power.

And if the AOD is junk like you say, why is a the modified AOD ofter described as stronger than the Turbo 400? Which is wiedely regarded as the toughest automatic around.

Most AOD problems are a result of user error and/or not setting it up right for the application. Set it up right and it'll blow the average T5 right off the road.

And you must be clarvoyent because you know disaster will strike your car on 08/04/05..... That date's not here yet.

i would go with a 5 speed. Conversion is easy I did one on my coupe. Get pedal assembly out of a 5 spd car, crossmember , h-pipe hanger, firewall adjuster, quad, and clutch cable. Sould be about it if i remember.

It can be done easily in a weekend.

crossmember for an aod will work just fine with an aod. Hell you can do a T-5 swap in an afternoon if you're half way motivated.

DITTO.

and if your just slapping stock AOD's in there with decent mods in the engine don't expect it to hold up well. now if you have a non-lock up style stall converter and shift kit it will help your tranny out alot being it won't jolt the input shaft when it goes into lockup in 3rd gear. even just a hardened input shaft helps out alot, you just have to know what your doing. or don't bother doing it at all.

LOL my clarvoyence is limited to a simple date input error (day/month/year) as oposed to month day year. truth be told I hate auto's with a passion. My AOD experiences have been limited to shredding clutches contaminated valve bodies and a seized governer. I Can't stand it hunting for gears and just generally never doing what i want it to. In every AOD car I have purchased the tansmission has failed. I personally have had no luck with them. The C6 in my dad's 3/4 ton has been industructable and it's 10 years older than my oldest AOD car has been with 100000 more miles on it. I personally have never once heard anyone say the AOD is anything compared to a th400... It's an FMX with an overdrive after all and the fmx was an abortion as well.

But if you love them so YOU CAN HAVE THEM. Give me some forks and some gears simplicity is bliss after all.

Personally, I would keep the c4 and see the gas milage. There is nothing as good as a fast shifting and strong c4. Another good point is no missed gears and you will have a better average track time than a stick driver (usually)

Thank you.

AOD's Are not junk...Lentech's Valvebody, non-locking converters, and hardened input shaft (not needed for anything under 500hp/tq because the VB eliminates the use of one.) They can be made real strong cheaply. WAY cheaper than a 3550, especially if you already have an auto in your car.

The factory crossmember from any 86 - 93 5.0 car and some 4 cyls will work for either the C4 the AOD or the T5 with no modification. I have used all 3 trannies at one point or another all using the factory crossmember.

Aod

I have had an AOD in my 88GT for about 25,000 miles. I'm not someone that babies their car either. I say "drive it like you stole it". If you can get someone who really knows the AOD's then it can be built right. I have a hardened input shaft, 2800 rpm stall convertor, shift kit, wide ratio gears for 1st and 2nd, a 2" wide OverDrive band instead of the 1 1/2 inch stock band, I also have extra clutches internally along with some ratching thing instead of the factory needle bearings. To be quite honest, I don't know everything that was done, I know I have a different governor and also have a different servo, yada yada yada. My friend built the transmission and that's all he does at the ford dealership. My point is that it has been extremely reliable and I'm easily pushing 500HP. My car is very streetable and is driven daily. The thing you have to decide with the AOD is do you want a lock-up or non lockup conv. The non-lockup, like the one I have, will rob some power and also will not be as good on gas. A lockup cov os better on gas but not as responsive if you're already in third or OD. Good luck.

If you are keeping stock gears up keep the C-4, it will still pull good mileage.
