so i changed my gear oil in my rear end (first time on this car) i have done it on my other cars but for some reason i can still smell the gear oil on this one:shrug:. its not leaking anywhere but there is some below the fill plug where it ran out when i was filling it up. so it not having any kind of leak is it just that old oil? and how long will this last? thanks

Once when i changed my gear oil a gust of wind kicked up and sprayed the dripping oil everywhere and on my face. Smell was there for a good part of the week.

I ended up getting gunk engine degreaser and spraying down the underside and washing it off.

I stunk for a week too

Mine did the same thing 2 weeks ago after I put the rearend girdle on it. But I could smell it more on the passenger side than the drivers side. I thought it was due to the rear end vent that is on top of the housing just behind the passenger side tire. Seems fine now.

Gear oil is the most putrid stench I've ever smelled in my life. It's the worst when it's in your hair.

I learned real quick how to fix this, if you use synthetic gear oil it's not near as bad, almost no smell at all, it's worth the extra money to me for just that reason.

How does Royal Purple smell???i need to change my gear oil....when i had my gears done i had royal purple and friction modifier put in...If i supplied the oil what do you guys think is shop would charge..i have a girdle so it would be easier to fill

Its not the gear oil, the friction modifier is the chit that stinks. That nasty smell is modifier. Crack open a bottle of gear oil, even cheap chit.... Doesn't smell so bad. But once you get the modifier open.... :barf: Esp the ford stuff. Parts stores modifier isn't so bad.
