hey Bob i just had a thought, you should check to see if the 05-06 mustang steering wheel will work on the cobra column, if so i think it would lend a slightly more vintage style flair to the interior. i think it would look absolutely awesome and still look factory as well. please tell me it will work, i want that to be my one suggestion that actually makes it to the car

Good idea Brian, but that is a BIG job to do. The SN95s had little in the way of a "steering column", at least in the sense of a classic. The SN197 is the same, the steering wheel sorta comes out of this small plastic box that is bolted under the dash.

it can't be that hard compared to what they have already done. i have seen people swap the stock wheel out for different year wheels and even aftermarkt wheels on SN-95 cars before don't see what would be that difficult about changing the stock cobra wheel out for another wheel my only concern is if the s-197 will work on the sn-95 column

I read that wrong, sorry. I thought you mean put a classic wheel on it.

Yeah the SN197s shouldn't be THAT hard to retrofit to the SN95 dash.

Hi All,

Wayne got the grill together the other day and it really makes the car look aggressive. Even Sandy, the office manager, said it looked mean. Here is a close-up of the intercooler heat exchanger air intake. What I notice, when walking around the car, is that you cannot see the intercooler. The vents are at such an angle that, to see the heat exchanger, you have to squat down really low. I like the effect. I am really glad we went this route instead of the Shelby "R" valance, Or even one of the many variations on that theme that have been built in the past.

Some have questioned if using an 05 steering wheel, instead of the 03, would give the car a more retro look. I am struggling with this one. While it just might be more retro, it might not compliment the flowing lines of the dash and door panel the way the 03 does. The 05 dash is very sharp and angular. The 03 dash is smooth and flowing. At this point, I am afraid to make any changes like this. I am thrilled with the overall interior and don't wish to do anything that might alter the way the interior flows and works together. I guess the only way we will know for sure is to try it and see how it looks. I will talk to Wayne and have him add it to the "to do" list. I will let you know now that it will be at the bottom. Wayne wants to have everything done within the next two weeks, so maybe it is something we can try after that.

Below is a shot of the WW spray nozzle. I need to wire ty the loose hoses, but overall, it looks pretty clean.

Today, we install the front and rear glass. Also, the alignment dude is supposed to show up and tune the suspension. I am looking forward to this. We can finalize the alignment and study the stance as well as the fit of the tires. The fellow doing the setup will be able to determine wheel clearance and help us in analyzing and sizing the final rubber we can fit.

Yeah, don't jump on that one, stick it in the back of your mind and keep going with what you have. But when you come accross a standard interior 05/06 in the wrecking yards (they're joining the ranks at a startling clip if you ask me) grab one and hold it up in there. I think the deluxe interior one with the aluminum spokes would look out of place in your interior since you have no brushed aluminum in there, the standard one with black spokes would fit better. The big old tri-bar running-horse screams retro more than the 3-spoke design to me. You never know, the addition may be a very simple bolt-on.

Keep up the progress and keep us posted on this amazing project!

I say stick with the one you have now. That would be mixing too many influences and draw away from the actual 03 Cobra in the 65 body. Besides without the rest of the angular interior of the 05 it would look out of place I think.

I have a slight problem and am looking for a little help.

I need a Cobra wheel that is 17 x 9 and has a backspacing of 6.5 to 6.6 (the factory Cobra backspacing is 6.12).

Any ideas?

Well, there are several aftermarket versions of the Cobra wheel, surely one of them will have the offset you need. I'm just not sure how close it will match the wheels you have.

my whole point in suggesting the 05 steering wheel was that the cobra wheel looks out of place with the rest of the car. this car really needs some kind of 3 spoke wheel to go with the vintage feel and the reason i suggested the 05 wheel was to also go with the modern feel of the interior without detracting from the vintage appeal of the exterior. basically trying to find something that complements both styles and i think the 05 wheel would do that nicely, provided it will fit.

temporary solution = a 3/8" spacer.

Spacers will not work. Spacers decrease backspacing while Bob needs additional backspacing.

Hi Bob,
I'm going to disagree with your statement that you need a Cobra wheel. I've been thinking all along that the Cobras were too plain for this car - or just not right.

I'd prefer to see a custom replica of one of the older Mustang wheels or something else over the top. Not 22" bling or anything; I think the 17" size is just right.

I doubt he'll find them on the shelf. Probably going to need to have custom ones made.

Hi H,

This is by far the toughest decision we have had to make to date. We could have used any wheel we wanted if the whole theme of the car was not the blending of 65 fastback and SVT cobra.

You are all going to laugh, but one of my favorite wheels is the 93 Cobra turbine wheels.

I have found that I can get some chrome Cobra "R" wheels with a 6.77 backspacing. Actually, the 17 x 9 05 mustang wheels have a 6.77 backspacing. I would just have to use a spacer plate to reduce the backspacing a bit.

which bone yard did you call for the wheel?? might give these guys a call, pretty good chance they have what you need.

recently changed their name I guess but they used to be called mustang parts specialists. I've used them a few times with good results.
