The story of my 1998 Mustang GT Carborated Conversion!

Ok to make a long story short I purchased a 98 GT car with just a tick over 80k miles on it in November of 2007. The car had some mild cams in it a PI swap and a few other small odds and ends. The car ran preety good for what it was too. BUT just not good enough, so I leaned on my good old friend Mr. Nitrous for a little more pep...So 125 shot here we come and melted Piston on the 3rd shot we go..

And it gets worst , After further inspection we found part of the ring in the lower intake... Uhhh Ohhh you know what that means I assume lol Trashed all the valves... So in January of 08 we pulled the motor and the project began! But this is where my first delima began... Build a 331 / 347 or build a all out 2 Valve? Well of course I went with the latter due to the fact ive never ben around a high compression all out 2 valve with a big shot of the good stuff...

Mods for EFI Setup:
Compression 11:5:1
Stock Block / Bored 0.30 / Deck Clearence 0cc
Stock Crank
Keith Black Forged Flattop Pistons / Fly cut
Probe Forged Rods
Perfect Circle Rings

ARP Head studs
Ford Racing 4v Oil Pump
CNC'd Heads with 1mm oversized stainless valves on both ends
Patriot Springs good for 600 lift
Mod Max Custom Cams
BBK Throttle Body 75mm
C&L Plenium w/ EGR Block Off
C&L Cold Air Intake
Professional Products Typhoon Intake Manifold / 170 tstat
Professional Products Fuel Rail w/ Regulator
Warlbro 255
Spec 3 Clutch w/ UPD Clutch Cable and Quadrant Kit
BBK Firewall Adjuster
Trick Flow UDP
Flowtech Longtube Headers
Mac Prochamber Xpipe w/ weld in 1 Chamber Flowmasters
Pro 5.0 Shifter
BBK Lowerin Springs

Im sure there is more but you get the idea lol

Exterior Mods:
New PPG / DFG Paint
2.5 Cobra R Cowl
Saleen S281 Spoiler
Black Bullet Wheels with Polished Lip 17x8 in front 17x10.5 Deep Dish in back wrapped in Mickey Thompson Drag Radials

So after 1 year of off and on work we get the motor together and installed...After thousands of dollars and countless hours of work.. We fill all the fluids up to theyre levels... Hook the battery up and the moment I waited over a year for is apon us.... So I attemp to start it and it cranks away but not a bit of fire... Well we called it a night it was 4 AM at this point... After a short nights sleep we returned in the morning and apon further inspection the fuel pump is not getting power... This is where the first wiring issue came into play.... We check to see if its getting any power and to our suprise NONE.

Check the fuse and shew it was blew.. Thaught we dodged a major problem... THAUGHT being the keyword...Install a new fuse turn the key over and POW the fuse blows... Ruhh Rohh Houston we have a problem... But damn I want to hear this car run.. So we run a hot to the pump and ground it just to get the motor some fuel... Get in the car with our new rigged fuel supply and turn it over once again.... DAMN still nothing get out pull a plug wire stick a screw driver in it and re-crank NOT a bit of fire... Ruhh Rohh we got a major problem here ladies and gentlemen..

I call a friend at the local Ford dealership explain to him whats going on and he says check the inertia switch... Check that and all is good.. So then he says the car is locked in safe/theft mode and says for me to bring it down for a reflash... So once at Ford im still patiently waiting to hear my baby fire when a Tech comes out and tells me my ecu is coming up blank... Oh lord can it get any worst? Yeahp sure can they charge me 4 hours of labor at 75.50 a hour to do absolutely nothing. And all they can tell me is to leave the car and they can dig deeper...But the thaught of a 30 hour charge at theyre rate gave me cold chills...

So here we are I get the car back home and within 20 minutes the topend of the motor is on ebay... I decide its time for a holley , victor jr and a msd box... Some people may say im just being insane or impatient but after a year of work and no payoffs I got to try something different...

So lets just call this the first of many blogs to come on this swap... Im sitting here looking at all the parts ready to go on.... This is a learning experience for me and I hope this detailed writeup will be able to help others! So stay tuned for more pics and info!

Best of luck to you.

IMO by the time you get all the carb stuff sorted out and running, you could probably figure out the issue you already have. Just need a wiring book and patience. Could have been something really simple.

Ever seen "The Perfect Storm" ? lol Scary ****!

Good luck on the carb mod but honestly i would try and find the problem with the fuel injection b4 you go and spend money for a carb setup. could be something really simple you AND FORD missed. Even if you had to buy a new computer thier not that expensive.

Then again carbed 4.6's are ****ing badass!!!!!!!

There is a guy on the modular fords website who has done a carb conversion on his 96 gt shop car. I can PM you his name if you want to talk to him. But as far as I know, a carbuerater needs less fuel pressure than fuel injection. I know that cushman motorsports sells fuel pumps for carbed cars. I'm sure you need new lines as well, and I hope your using the wiring kit that is plug and play. You can check out Hot Rod magazine's carbed 2v build up for tuning info.

Good luck dude, but I agree you should not give up on your EFI setup yet. It you didn't hack the harness apart then It's gotta be something simple.
