My pump is dying and has a reddish brown material usually associated with bearing failure all over the pulley. The pulley wobbles when spun also. Has anyone removed these pumps completely and still been able to pass emissions? Its $33 for a reman pump, so its not that bad.. I was just thinking if I could ditch the system and not worry about it, why not? I am in California however, so I worry about being able to pass emissions without it.

You know you need to get another pump, so just do it.

Good luck.

This is true, but I thought ditching it might free up some HP. I know on my 66 Mustang, the car actually ran CLEANER without the pump. Problem is they can easily see if those are hooked up or not. This pump is at least somewhat burried in the engine bay and less obvious to point out if it were to come up missing.

I agree with JT, especially since you are in Cali.

Using the stock cats without the air pump can lead to early failure of the cats, so I've heard.

Sorry - I didnt mean to be so blunt earlier - I was in a mood.

Because you are in Cali (we also have very stringent emissions here - I flunk because I have two high flow aftermarket cats rather than the antiquated stocker, for example) I really feel that the 33 bucks is a great deal (a pump for my 94 is over 100 bucks).

If you really want to fart around with it - you could gut your existing pump. When I spin the pumps by hand, there is almost no resistance (esp compared to something like a PS pump) so I dont think it's that parasitic. The gutting idea is only something we think about doing hypothetically in our minds, of course.

Good luck.

The three way cats require the fresh air injection from the pump to complete the process. Without it your emissions will shoot way up there.

I went and picked up the pump last night. Sound easy enough to change, so I will take care of that tomorrow. Next up will be finding out whats up with the EGR.

The air/smog pump is just part of the AIR system, which is just outdated emmisions technology. Modern cats with thier air storage ability don't need the system, but the old cats that came with our cars didn't have this ability. Will your cats burn up? I am not sure but you can still pass emmisions without the pump. The EGR however will effect emmisions especailly on the rollers on a load test. Since in california, a polluting car is considered worse than the rape of a 10 year old, you might want to keep the emmisions.
