Any of you guys know what the stock thermostat on an 01 GT is? I was wandering through Pep Boys today while buying some cleaning ****, and I came accross thermostats and thought maybe I could put a lower temp one in and it would help keep the engine a little cooler? I dunno, I'm not a real car guy yet, but I hope to get there one day. Does this work, does it run any danger to the engine?

Thermostat = the valve that lets coolant flow when the engine reaches a certain temp... its the metal part that connects to your upper radiator hose right beside the alternator... dont think 2 would make much of a difference, itd still open at the same temp.

a lower one will make the motor run cooler. the stock one is a 192degree one i believe, maybe 195. generally people put in a 180 t-stat.

Oh really? Wouldnt it be easier to just replace the thermostat?

Its common practice to replace the thermostat with a 180* one. I have it in mine. You should tune the ecu for the fan to come on at the lower temp as well though.

? i just read everybodys post too this a few times and i don't see where you think they are not talking about replacing it.

go with a 180 your car will run a little cooler.

....but no lower than a 180. Running a 160 in a fuel injected car = bad news for power, smog and fuel economy.
