Think I can take my car subs and make home theatre floor speakers?

I have 2 square "12 inch Kicker Solobarc L7's" that I am not using, some 5.25 inch Inifity speakers, and a crossover... I was thinking today... What if I built two floor-speaker shaped boxes, put a sub in the bottom of each one, the infinity speakers and maybe some tweaters, all wired to the crossover hooked up to a home stereo reciever and amplifier.... Would it sound good? Or since these subs are specifically designed for a small area (the inside of a car) that it wouldn't sound good?

NO..the ohms are different I beleive. They'd blow in no time.

Hook up a Car battery to them, and hide it. Then it might work...

What's the impedance of the car subs you plan to use?
Look up the specs for your receiver; can it drive that impedance?
Home receivers are typically designed to drive 8 ohm speakers. Auto speakers are rarely 8 ohms, more common is 4 ohms, 2 ohms, and even 1 ohm.
However, you could connect two 4 ohm auto speakers in series in an enclosure and this would appear to the receiver as a single 8 ohm sub.

My old suite mate in the dorms had his dual 12's running off his head unit... if I remember right everything he had was JBL but I may be wrong about the brand. Nor do I know how he did it, but everything was wired into the head unit and not a car battery. Also he was an electrician so possibly he may have rewired or put capacitors or some such in the loop. Just thought I'd give you some reasurance that it can be done. Sorry I dont know how.

you may be able to overcome some of the electrical problems by using a car amp that has an impedence that matches your subs...the bigger issue, as I see it, is that you are going to get fairly poor quality sound in comparison to a system that was built for home entertainment

Yes most home audio amps are made for 8 ohm or higher. Just go out and buy a high end amp/reciever. The high end ones are generally high current, meaning they can handle low ohm loads. I was looking at an Onkyo 5.1 reciever that was HC and 1 ohm stable.

If you have a high current home amp then yes you can do that.

A plate amp would work for the subs, as well. They are typically setup for 4 ohm loads...Parts Express has some decent ones for pretty cheap. Wouldn't really work for the mids or highs, though.

Agreed. You can make car stuff into great HT stuff. Looks at towers made of 4 6.5" Soundstream Exact woofers/2 tweeters and dual sub enclosures with 2 JL 12w3's each.
