Thinking about a 4 barrel

Currently I have a 1965 Fastback with original 289 motor that was rebuilt 1700 miles ago. The previous owner told me that it was rebuilt to original spec. I'm looking to swap out the new original style 2 barrel carb and intake manifold and go with a 4 barrel set-up. I was looking to go with the Edelbrock performer intake with a Edelbrock 600cfm carb. At this point I don't want to swap out the heads or the cam, but i might in the future. So my question is do I just do the performer intake and 600cfm carb, or will that be to mild if I do decide to swap the cam and/or heads at a later point? I also plain on getting TRI-Y headers to replace the stock manifolds. I'm not looking for a ton of power but someday i would like to be around 300 HP.

For a completely stock setup, 600 CFM is too much carb. If you go with the Edelbrock Performer cam, the 600 CFM carb is about right. The stock setup works best with something like 453 CFM if I recall correctly.

I am running Performer cam, intake manifold, and 600 cfm carb (with ported stock heads and roller rockers) and it's just about right.

I figure I'm probably getting about 260-270 HP at the crank.

If I were you I'd go with a 600cfm carb and the performer RPM intake manifold.

The performer RPM is a little more agressive but will still work good on a stock engine.

The 600cfm carb is going to be too much, but should be liveable until you can upgrade the exhaust system and later do a heads and cam swap.

The 600cfm carn and RPM manifold will be components you can use when you try to achieve your 300hp goal. The regular performer and 450cfm carb, not so much.

A properly tuned 600cfm carb will be fine for your application.

Steve,
I have a used dual feed 600 CFM I purchased from ebay and never used. I also have a used performer intake. See my add in classic classifieds (engine parts). I ended up getting a 2-4V for my small block so never used the 600 CFM carb. PM me for more info if interested.
