Hey All:

I havn't been here in almost 10 months, when I posted a very similar thread to this, and I just need some more info, if you good people don't mind.

This is the deal, right now, I have a 1993 Infiniti G20 with 123,000 miles, now, milage isn't what scares me, I have seen these cars last 300,000 miles+, but I am concerned about the non-nissan built stuff, compressors, door motors, and just general stupid stuff that will be a hassle as I look towards collage in a year, so time to get a newer car. Originally, I was going to stick with an import, 4 banger, great cars, very reliable, last forever, nice looking, when you INVEST money into them. So I was starting to think about a diffrent car. So me and a bunch of other people went on this church thingie, and I got to ride in a 04 6-cyl Mustang Convertable, and I BECAME IN LOVE. (This was yesterday) and I got to drive an 02 today, simply amazing. The feeling of wind in your hair going 70 is amazing, something I have never felt before so I decided I needed one. A closed top Infiniti with a moon roof isn't going to cut it anymore. So, as soon as I got home, I jumped on Auto trader, suprisingly, I can afford a 99+ convertable (come on, this is Texas, Fords out number cows, and there are more cows than people here, not really, but there are a ton of them) So my questions to all of you:

How long have you seen Mustangs last, how many miles?

About how much per year is maintance going to cost, not oil changes and spark plugs, but alternators going out, etc. etc. Milage I'm going to be looking at in my price range is 60-80k.

For those of you who own convertables, do they leak? If so, how bad?

I hear the 99+ 6-cyl's are more powerfull than the 94-98 GT's? Is this true? If not, how can you get your little 6 up to 240 WHP with out a supercharger?

What are common problems to be expected with a Mustang with about 70k on it?

Timing belt or chain, I think it's a belt, and if so, after how many miles does it need to be replaced?

Are these car's easy to work on? I am having MAJOR probs with my G20 right now and a R12 to R134 conversion. Is it like a puzzle, or would a Mustang make Einstein's his hair look even worse? lol

I think that's it, I know I will come up with more questions, but I have not had enough caffine today.

I have a 98 vert that I bought in 99. No leaks, no nothing. The only thing I had a problem with was the stock battery died, and I had to replace a lightbulb in the trunk.

A Mustang can last as long as you want it to provided you take care of it. There are some 99+ Mustangs out there that are in worse shape than an older Fox Body.

98 GT = 225HP/286Tq.
99 V6 = 190HP/220Tq.

Exhaust including head and mid-pipe, CAI, U/D pullies, H/C/I, TB, MAF, chip could get you 50HP more if done right.

Fords are harder to work on than Chevys, as Fords are built to last longer, but the parts are more complicated. I think Chevy is easy to work on, simple parts, but don't last as long. It also depends on what skill level you are at when it comes to playing mechanic.

Thats the SOHC GT motor your talking about right??? There's quite a difference in the DOHC and the 5.0 of 94-95 . Which my car will have sitting in its tummy if i have anything to say about it.

I thought single cam V8's were pushrod motors, not OHC motors.

5.0s are pushrod. There are SOHC and DOHC 4.6 motors. "Single cam" 4.6s have one cam on each head so it's realy two cams, and four for "Dual" cams.

I take care of any car I buy very very well. The Infiniti I own came it me in pretty bad condition, it is now the cleanist 93 you will ever see. Every person that has looked at it thinks so, I am just asking a lot for a 93 , hance that is why it hasn't sold. Sounds good, how about Pre 99 V6's, how do they stack up?

Thanks!

Also, in your guys' opinion, what should be max miles I am looking at with a 97+, if you could break it down by year, I am familiar with 15k per year, but woundering if there is anything else I should be looking at?

Thanks!

I would personally stick with the 99+ V6's if you are concerned with performance as you seem to be. I've driven several 94-98 V6's and they really don't have any oompt at all.

I haven't driven any 99+ V6's yet so i can't really compare how it is compared to my GT, but i'll just say if you LOVED driving a V6 convertible, they you should really go test drive a GT

Try modding them for that "Oomph" factor you say they lack, we do!
