Thinking of a 93 are pistons really not as good?

Ive heard they are not as strong as 89-92 motors. Are they alot slower? im planning on adding blower or turbo so should this not be a factor? thanks

The 93 pistons aren't forged as the 87-(early)92.
They are hypernauetic (sp)

They are "just as fast"...that horsepower to 205hp was just a marketing ploy by Ford to make the 94/95 Gt's with 215hp look more appealing.

The 93 pistons are actually lighter, just get a good tune and you'll be fine. Don't throw a lot of boost at them anyways IMO.

Good Luck!

Personally owned a 1993 and it was just as fast as any other Mustang I have owned from the Fox platform era. As 5spd GT stated: Ford lowered the output because the 1994 5.0L came from the factory with only 215HP. The previous cars produce 225 at the flywheel.

Hypereutectic pistons use a differnet process (cheaper and easier to make.) The result is that the pistion is more thermodynamically stable to help with cold start emissions. But being more stable also means that the piston is brittle and doesn't deform is something goes wrong. Almost all new cars (even the newer Mustangs) have these pistions and they are boosted on a regular basis without any issues. The setup just needs to be correct so you don't mess up the motor...

There are many things that will break on any stock 5.0 motor long before the pistons will become a factor, the block usually splits before anything else. I personally own a 93 and I sprayed a 125 shot on the bone stock motor for quite a while without any problems at all. I just took my motor apart and the cylinders still have the original cross hatch marks.

Forged pistons take more of a beating befoere breaking, they are softer metal. Hypereutic are brittle, so if your tune is not good they will break without much punishment. As long as you tune is good, they last just as long.

If I had a choice between the 2, I would pick Forged.

Its all about the tune. Hypers don't like detonation, not that any piston really does, so if you don't run right on the edge of detonation you will be fine. Are the forged pistons more desirable? Yeah but don't let them scare you off from a nice car. Lots of guys are running FI on hyper pistons and have no issues. I am getting ready to bump up to a 100 shot on my 93.

I am more worried about the block over the pistons.

Worst part about the 93 Hypers is that is for some reason you have a Piston problem it will shatter like glass and be in a million pieces and take out pretty much the ENTIRE engine, whereas the >92 Forged will just have a chunk come out and most of the engine can survive.

I wouldn't realy even worry about them to much unless you plan on spraying N2o and blowing with 20 psi and never adjust your timing

Proper tune is the important part. An interesting fact...the new Z06 Corvette uses hyper's. The way i heard it, is that because they're lighter than forged aluminum, they're better for higher RPM natural aspiration applications. BUT, another intersting fact, not sure if it made it through this forum, but about a month or so ago there was a big thing going around from Vortec that their test Z06 car spit a piston out of the side of the block and peeled a few hyper pistons like onions, on SIX POUNDS of boost. Supposedly, the car wasnt even being raced, just driven, and the engine just let go. Rumor? Who knows. I have seen detonation crumble plenty of hyper pistons though.

Buddy has a blown zo6 properly tuned with 6lbs or boost dynoed at 522rwhp. No problems...the tune is a big factor. They also have higher compression to deal with. That is the "main" reason for not putting so much compressed boost in the engines...

If you are talking about the c6 zo6 than i am not suprised. The compression ratio from the factory is 11:1 so why would you put boost on it? http://turbomustangs.com/techarticles/stockblock.php will show you how much a hyper piston can really take.

Again if one does let loose its going to take the entire engine, major carnage! Lets just say you drop a valve and it makes contact with the piston, it will shatter like glass and destroy everything! With a Forged, you will bend the valve and maybe knock a hole in your piston.

ill be looking at the car this weekend. ITS getting harder and harder to find 89-92 that are not rusty OR TRASHED

driver19 - Nothing wrong with a 93... The pistons are also a bit lighter, that's a plus...hehe

The "lighter" deal is really nothing when you talking about such low horsepower. I personally wouldnt put over 12 PSI or 100 shot on anything w/ hypers, just so i wouldnt worry about my DD blowing up on my face. some people have no problems with them like groverdill or Aliate X, and other burns holes in them in short order. really a crap shoot...but if you stay with mild boost and a descent tune you will be fine.

Hence, why I put "hehe" I wouldn't put 12psi or a 100 shot if I had the stock forged pistons either...

The difference is quite small, even in the tune IMO. The block is the weaker point...that is where the "worry" needs to go towards...
