im thinking about getting these heads, the gt-40 turbo swirl aluminum ones, http://www.jegs.com/cgi-bin/ncommerce3/ProductDisplay?prrfnbr=129017&prmenbr=361

will i have any piston to valve clearence problems? what rockers should i use and which valve covers? will i need new pushrods or any other parts for the swap? will regular aftermarket headers fit or will i need gt-40 specific ones? thanks

If i was gonna spend that much id get some trickflow heads or some edelbrocks... a guy in here got summit to pricematch thier edelbrocks and he got them for 999.00 for the set and they have a 1.90/1.60 valve instead of a 1.94/1.54 valve. Just my opinion but that 529.99 price is just for one head. Piston to valve clearence will depend on the specs of your cam shaft. Your valve covers may work if you use felpro's extra thick cork gasket or go with some fox body valve covers as they will work but you will have to grind the baffle out under the oil fill tube. Id just use summits rockers or fords blue rockers.. Summit has a nice pair of blue rockers that are under 200$. I used stock push rods back with my edelbrocks but not sure about GT40 turbo swirls.

Yea I think your reading that add wrong. That's a quantity of one head. So your looking at $1040 for both of them. TFS or Edelbrocks are around $1000 and are much better.

im not reading anything wrong, i know its for each head, if it was for both i would have already bought them. im using my stock cam with the heads but i dont want heads that will cause ptv issues? or will i even have any if i use my stock cam?

With the stock cam you can get just about any head.

If you plan on sticking with a stock cam id say the 1.90/1.60 valve edelobrocks or the GT40 turbo swirls. Maybe throw on a 1.72 roller rocker to give it a little more lift if you plan on keep that stock cam.. but there are plenty of mild cams out there that will help with the power but not effect your driveability so much. My buddy has a mild crane cam in his car and it lopes very very little and drives around with out any bucking at all at low rpms.

Dont know if you are set on those heads or not, and i have never run the GT40Y head. But I did just change a pair of heavy ported GT40's off my Cobra for a set of Edelbrock's and I can tell you first hand it has much better torque and upper rpm power. I am not trying to sell you on the Edelbrocks.LOL! Just giving you a comparison of my GT40's and the switch to Edelbrock. May have seen the a difference with GT40Y heads also.

I agree that the edelbrocks can make good power but I have driven a car with gt40 turboswirls unported that ran 12.66 on my first pass in a car that wasnt mine so im sure I could have gotten it lower. Blocking off the smog is easy you can go to ford or order the part online that screws into the back of the head that blocks off the emission ports... If i remember right you have to block off both sides of the heads as there is no right or left head. Get some good head gaskets... felpro 1011-2 or some other gasket... FTI recommends a graphite type headgasket wich is what the stock gasket is made with... your gonna have to do a lot of prep work getting the graphte off the block.... have a paint scraper and a fine wire brush to remove the material then whipe it clean with paint preper or brake parts cleaner. You need to do some rearch online on torque sequence. Its a fairly big job and if you have no clue what your doing you can really screw things up. Make sure when you get your heads you get pedestal mount so you can use your stock rockers if you need to. I have a freind who has some 1.7 crane cobra rockers for sale for 75$ if you are intrested. What intake do you plan on running? I think the edelbrock RPM or RPM II would be a great intake to top off that combo.. and if you want a good cam the lunati 51014 is a great cam that will clear with the 1.90 intake valves and it did clear with my 1.94 i had put in my edelbrocks when I ran them a few years back. I made 315 rwhp with edelbrocks that were stage 2 ported by bennet racing. Hope some of this helps you out!
