Thinking of installing my tranny

I bought a replacement for my failing t45 (just another one) bought it cheap and I really dont want to pay for labor. Im not bad mechanically but just wondering if it is a project I should undertake. I will have to do it on jackstands and that is my only concern.

But my question is what should I look out for or are there any tech tips that could save me some trouble.

i have replaced trannys in my ranger (5 times in and out), once in my GMC truck, and once in my mustang. all were done in my front yard. it isnt hadr at all. a manual will be even easir with no trans lines to the radiator. should be about a days work. get a long (20-25") extension and a universal swivel to get those top bolts out.

also what works really good if your having trouble lineing it up is go to the hardware store and buy some bolts that will fit in the block and cut the heads off of them, then screw them into the block a little so you can use them to lineup the tranny... works like a charm..

oh.. and get a buddy to help ya..

Not sure about the t45 however the 4r70w was a PITA to remove/install.

I don't look forward to replacing a starter on this car, damn bolts are pretty tough to get to

The starter bolts are a pain as well as the top tranny bolts but with the right tools you should be able to do it. Get a tranny jack. That helps a ton.

And leave out the one hard to get to starter bolt! The two visible ones are plenty enough. You'll thank yourself in the long run.

Starter bolts are a PITA. I just installed a T-45 last week...only i did it on a lift

I also pulled/installed the 4r70w on a lift. My setup to get those top bolts out wasn't the prettiest but did eventually work. Expect to get frustrated and im willing to bet that you'll get to bleed

It's not all that bad really.. just keep at it and don't get mad.

Starter bolts only took me about 2 minutes I guess...not hard at all . What are you guys doing??? Everyone always complaines about the starter bolts, and it took me no time to get the starter out.

just keep at it and don't get mad.

this one is VERY important

also, try and find every tool needed for the job, nothing worse than having to go to the store to buy stuff in the middle of a job (although it is a good excuse to get pizza, beer, burgers, gatorade or icee's)

T-45 is very straight forword. Hardest part is to remove that 3rd starter bolt. And possibly top bellhousing bolt(s). otherwise, its easier then installing header. U need no special tools. U might want to make sure you have enough extentions, and have buddy around to give you hand when your installing/removing trans itself

what tools are you guys using to get the starter bolt out i havent yet looked at it but i may be undertaking the project tomorrow.

like what is the best way or what angle.

One tip on the top tranny bolts is to leave the crossmemeber off of the tranny so the tail hangs down (more room!)

well if hes not pulling the bellhousing off i dont see why he would have to touch the starter.

if your just swaping t45 for t45 it should be simple.

drain fluid
remove shifter (or atleast handle to make it come out easier)
remove driveshaft
remove mid-pipe
remove trans to bellhousing bolts
support trans with a jack or something
drop the crossmember
pull trans out

2 extentions and a swivle...worked great for me. It was a hair bit tough to keep the socket on the bolt....but nothing hard.

I just happen to have teh mad tyte skillz!

on T-45 the trans to bellhousing bolts are IN the bellhousing.. (1 piece drop)
