Thinking of welding straight pipes, instead of mufflers

I didnt find much on a search.......... Ive had this GT for a year now and its still all stock. I need some kind of exhaust sound. I dont have money for weld in mufflers now. So.....I was thinking about taking the car down to my favorite exhaust shop and having them cut out the stock mufflers and weld in straight-pipes. How will this sound, Its not a daily driver.

With the factory cats still in place they will muffle the exhaust to a point, I have heard a 5.0 with cats and no mufflers (still full exhaust) and it sounded ok, but it was LOUD.

I personally don't like straight pipes, but anything is better than stock.

It will sound like crap. Just spend the money on some decent mufflers, and get you an h pipe or an x pipe. The car will sound good then. Also, running no mufflers on my car seemd to hurt performance.

GOGO GAdget Noise Pollution Ticket! No it doesn't sound that good when I was putting on my catback I started it up with no mufflers it sounded OK but not somethin I would drive around with it kinda sounded like a beater. Look on ebay or the used/swap parts sections of some websites. You might as well do it right the first time your gonna pay to have some cut and weld anyway

I have straight pipes on my car and LOVE them. They sound awesome and I get nothing but compliments. It is a very deep rumble and screams at WOT. The only drawback is that it backfires/pops when downshifting especially in the cold. As for losing power thats . I'm 18 and ran a 13.9 at the track...my first time there! That was with straight pipes as my only mod. I'm replacing it with an SLP full exhaust next week and have to get rid of it because i think it would just be too loud with an OR X pipe. I'm selling my straight pipes to a friend, who says he loves them.

You can afford to buy an 02 Stang but cant afford mufflers? Whats wrong with that picture? Anyway it will sound like $h!t, save your pennies and buy a decent catback system.

I think straight pipes sound like crap, the popping on deceleration and downshifts suck. That is just my personal opinion and dont wat to get into flame war with those of you with straight pipes.

i say go for it. i was about to go that route on my 03, or glasspacks. 50 bucks installed cant beat it. i waited awhile instead and got some single chamber flows installed in the stock h, foud as luck and sounds good. got a budd with straight pipes on his 5.4 f150 it sounds good. do it you may like them alot. if you let people talk you into mufflers a set of dynomax race bullets should be 60 bucks. plus 50 install, 110 out the door. Now for the dick wondering how you can afford a gt and not 200 for mufflers,mommy and daddy dont pay our bills, so sometimes having 200 bucks to spend at once is hard to come by,prick

If it were my car, and I didn't have the money for mufflers or a new cat-back, I would at least want to hear what a straight-piped 4.6 GT sounded like. Does anyone here have any sound clips? A friend of mine reomved his stock cat-back and just ran the factory h-pipe on his '89 GT. It didn't sound near as bad as I thought it would. It didn't pop much, and it wasn't THAT loud, although it was VERY throaty. It just depends on what you think sounds good. It's your car, do what you want to it. As for the power gain/loss from this setup, I doubt that there would be much change in either direction. Just my 2 cents. Good luck!

I bought the car when I was a technician at a car dealer. I left the company and am currently working at a auto parts job.....with a $7.00 a hour pay cut. Thats why I have no money.

Im just looking for something to hold me over until I can do it right. Cant spend more than $50 now. Stock exhaust is getting old

I agree, straight pipes sound like crap. A friend of mines girlfriend had them on her BULLIT and it ruined the whole car. Save your money rather than paying to have your mufflers cut out and pipe welded in. Straight pipes = worst thing you could do to your car

I don't see what being able to afford an 02 GT has to do with being able to afford extra parts. I have straight pipes on my Cobra vert and it is so loud, I plan to install a full Bassani after I finish the KB swap. My car sounds so cool that high school kids follow me home just so they can hear me open her up at the last stoplight outside town. You will loose a little low end, but do it as a temporary upgrade untill you can upgrade her the right way! My two cents!

This is just my opinion, but I don't like the way straight pipes sound on a late model Mustang. A friend of mine that had a 98 GT had them welded on his car. They sounded ok, but it was a lot better when he had 2-chamber Flows on it. The straight pipes made it sound very muffled, almost gurggly or "underwater" sounding. Everyone told him it sounded as ****ty as an F-body.
