The power mirror switch decided it didn't like the car this morning. FUN!

I noticed last night that when I got into the car, the drivers side mirror was all the way up and to the left. Didn't really think anything of it after my experience with that repair shop yesterday. Got in the car this morning, and it had done it again. I thought I'd just run down to a junk yard and get a new switch. Obviously I never made it that far. Luckily I was in a parking lot of one of my customers, so a fire extinguisher was close at hand. The damage is all superficial thankfully. Not even the wires to the switch got melted. Just the switch. I'm also lucky it didn't get those two butane lighters siting RIGHT above the flames.

I've got a buddy of mine who knows EVERYBODY making some phone calls to see how cheap I can get the replacement parts. So far, I need a new switch, upper and lower console plastic (ashtray, whole nine yards), & new harness ends for both the cigarette lighter and the mirror switch.

As a side note, does the mirror switch have power all the time? even when the ignition is off? I know the lighter does, and I couldn't find a fuse labeled "Power Mirrors" so I just pulled the lighter fuse.

So where do I send my "Flaming Ford" application again?

WOW!!! Glad you got it put out before it became a BIG mess! Mu power mirror switch only works to move the mirror out...the other directions dont work at all but every single junkyard Fox i come across already has this switch taken out...must be a common problem lol. Good luck gettin it repaired!

Manual side mirrors FTW.

This is exactly why I keep a fire extinguisher in the hatch. You could be leaking nitrous and fuel with the alternator sparking and the plug wires arcing on a 110 degree day in the desert and it would STILL be a burnt out taillight bulb that would end up burning the car to the ground.

I had a buddy lose his Stang to a fire started by an amp wire under the back seat. '96 GT. The wheels were puddles by the time the fire dept put it out. :nonono:

Mirror switch is powered by fuse #8 which powers all of the interior lighting, hood light and radio. It is hot at all times (not switched).

It pays to know people. I got the hook up from a buddy of mine, got all the console plastic in grey and the ONLY thing is that the ashtray door is broken  but that can be fixed. Other than that, its in better shape and color than the stuff that caught fire. Best of all, I didn't pay a DIME for it. Boo Mustang fires. Hooray free parts!
