AOD to 5 speed swap....Do you regret doing it...how much work was involed? Did you do it yourself? Just curious...Thanks

I did it myself.

I didn't regret it.

It wasn't too bad of a swap. Had to chang the pedal assembly, move the spedo cable to a new hole in the firewall, and cut the floor a little bit where the shifter comes through the tranny hump. Other than that pretty straight foward.

I did it myself. Costed about $1200 for everything. Install was a pain but in the end it was welllllllllllllllllllllllllll worth it!!!!!

You know it is funny you should post this topic. Doing the 5 speed swap on my GT is something I have been considering for a long while. But I have pretty much decided to stay auto and here is why.

My neighbor recently broke his foot and since his s-10 is a standard he can't drive it. So he ask me the other day if I would drive it to work a day or two to keep the battery charged and so it didn't just set for six weeks. I hadn't driven a stick since the '82 GT that I had for a while a couple of years ago, so the first day I really enjoyed driving a stick again but by about the second day when I drove to lunch in bumper to bumper traffic I found myself thinking why would anyone put one of these in there cars on purpose? I can see having one if I ever buy another 5.0 as just a toy, but for something I drive regularly nope. I guess it just comes down to preference. I firmly belive EVERYONE should know how to drive a stick , but that doesn't mean I want to drive one everyday.

yeah....I miss driving 5 spd once in a while..not sure what Ill do yet, just wanted to see who has done it and if they regret or love it

A "Auto" with a manual valve body and a good better converter can be fun too. Bangin' gears is fun, and when driving a manual, your really driving while an auto your just controlling throttle and steering. They have thier pro's and con's, both manual and auto.

i did the swap on mine and the only regret i have is that the five speed seems to eat up clutches,still tryin to get that fixed.Ohter than that i would much rather have a manual than an auto.JMO

i did mine a lil while ago. very easy i love it. its a new animal with a 5 speed in it. i did mine for under 500 bucks

I own only manuals now and drive 500+ miles a week a lot of the time in bumper to bumper, and can say I wouldnt trade one of the sticks for an auto. Autos can be made faster, but for the fun factor and gas saving of a stick I personally wouldnt build an auto.

Both have pros and cons, but I did the swap on my 66 Mustang, and my 89 Mustang and can say it was worth it.

The 5 speed swap set me back about $1200 with all the little extras I bought. My AOD was on its way out, so the 5 speed swap was a no brainier for me. I had my friend do the swap for me, took him a weekend to do(with a lot of drinking in between). The swap was way worth it, felt like a different car.

AOD TO 5 speed

Went from AOD to 5 speed on 88 gt. love it now car is for fun and manual gives me better interaction with car. Pedal installaton was a job but a good learning experience not to mention TKO 600 will handle the power my motor put out.

Just do it and ignore the extra weight and power draw down auto has.

Do these $1200 conversions I see advertised in our magazines come complete with everything including computer, pedal assembly, sensors, bellhousing etc ...

If I ever get my stolen 7K mile notch back with the pedal assembly still intact I'll consider doing the swap to the AOD notch I just picked up to fill the void in my garage

You don't need a new computer when switching from an auto to a stick. Just when switching from a stick to auto.
Most kits I have seen for $1200 come with all used parts.
I peiced my kit together with a new tranny, flywheel,clutch, clutch fork and cable, FWA, shifter, etc.... So it ended up being more money. The only parts that I got used was the bellhousing, the pedal assembly, and the misc. parts for the center console (ie. shifter boots and trim ring)

Good Luck which ever way you decide.
