Ok so i messed with the ignition timing today and when all said and done it lost its power. reset it and got good power out of it but I hear a weird noise, kinda like a grrzzzzzing in the the 3krpm and up, I never had pinging (detonation) issues before and I dont know if I have it now. I went and filled up with 92 octain (colorado has not 95/96 or higher octain ratings). Drove it and it drives fine until I get on it at WOT, then that dam noise comes back, I also picked up some 104 octain booster trying to see if that would help, but nothing. I was using a timing light but on my harmonic balancer I dont remember seeing any numbers and its hard to judge by where to set the timing, there is this little plate above the balancer with a little notch in it, then to the right it kinda rounds out to a point. The marking on the balancer is just a big line (notch). Its the stock balancer but thats what im using. 1st time I put the timing in the little circular notch, 2nd attempt I put it about 1/4 to 1/2 an inch to the right. Am I doing it right? I also removed the spout when I did it both times, reinstalled it with the car off. Any suggestions?

Paint the 10* marking on your balancer. I use a silver sharpie but chalk also works.
I use the knife edge on the far side of the timing pointer (not the hole).
I don't know what to make of the strange noise so I'll leave that for others.
