I'm trying to figure out my total timing advance of my stock 289 dist with pertronix conversion. I know you disconnect the vac. to check base but do you also for checking the total? Is there both centrifugal force(mechanical) advance and vac. advance? If I rev w/o the vac. I don't get any change. My buddy said I need to check it w/o vac. to simulate WOT but I don't see how it's going to mechanically advance and overcome the vac. diaphram(it gives a good amont of resistance). I am using the correct port on the pass. side of carb.(Holley 600). Been out of the carb'd stuff so long I don't remember.

thanks

The dist. is still in the car but I pulled the vac advance stuff off so I can see the mechanical advance mechanism. It isn't rusty at all but I just can't seem to get it to move, it's not wired or locked that I can see from looking down in. Springs and counterweights are there. You guys have any ideas what to try to free it up. I'm assuming if someone locked it out I would see something like safety wire or a screw?????

Sure sounds like its locked out. Make sure where it does move that there isnt some sort of little bolt/nut locking it out.

I sprayed some penetrant down in the hole under where the rotor goes on because that's where it should rotate from the shaft attached to the dist gear. Car runs OK just that I'm going to a drag day on Fri. and won't be able to fix before then probably, I'll just set full advance and plug the vac. for the track. I can't wait to feel the extra 20 degrees of timing I've been missing out on WOT. Now I understand some of the flat top end response, thought it was a carb issue.

I need to get my EFI conversion done, F this crap
