Trying to tune my new motor, and had a few issues with the timing pointer not being in the right place. I have now reset tdc and found that the car was actually starting and running fine at 22 degrees initial (no vac advance). There was no sign of pinging.

I have since reset the timing to 16 deg which I read to be more normal. How much timing can I expect to be able to reasonably run on this motor?

Also, I am curious as to what would be a reasonable/normal vacuum reading at itdle with a stage 1 cam on a new motor like this - I am pulling around 15in hg.

timing depends on a lot a variables with the engine and materials assembled with. You'll just have to try to set your timing to where you get the ping/spark knock and then turn it back 2-3 degrees.
I have the TFS stage one cam, Edelbrock RPM heads, Edelbrock RPM II intake and my intial is 18* with the spout out. I get the ping at about 21* intial timing.

To check for ping, set your timing to the desired advance. Take it for a ride, don't beat on it, get into fifth gear at about 1500rpm and slowly go to WOT. If it is going to ping you will hear it right away.

OK at least that sounds like my engine is not too dissimilar to yours. What is your timing curve like? When is the advance all in by?

Anyone else with TW heads out there? How much timing are you running.

i havent gone in near depth the observations that u have with this but i have the trickflow top end kit and if i remember right its set right now at 16 degrees advance. cam straight up.
