im trying to troubleshoot a weird noise coming from my car. i eliminated the rocker arms (cuz they were torqued) and belt driven accessories. i am now down to the timing chain. my weird noise sounds like valve chatter but it isnt.
i have never heard a noisy timing gear before so i was wondering if anyone has one? i dont want to rip my stuff off to find out there is nothing wrong with my timing chain. i am trying to get into contact with my friend to see if he put in a different set of timing gears or a new chain.

i know when i idle, i hear what seems like valve chatter but when i rev the car, i hear a regular motor revving up without that noise. i dont hear the "whirr whirrr" noise a supercharger makes so i take it that it isnt a noisy timing gear. anyone have any input?

if i was to put in a noisy timing gear, would it wreak havoc on my EEC IV computer on my 89 stang?

Well I can tell you that I have a noisy gear drive in my 92 and it makes the exact noise that you are describing at idle...I think it is from having too much clearance between the idler gears and timing chain cover...because you must trim some metal off of the back of the cover for the gear drive to work...apparently I trimmed too much and I get a chattery sound at idle...but when I rev it all you here is the gear whine...you probebly have a gear drive in there and the timing cover was trimmed too much....like me
