To restate my problem:
I've got an 86 4 cyl that has received a 302 (carb) transplant somewhere along its way. At approx 3200 to 3400 rpm, it sounds like it is choking out and loses power until I shift gears or slow down. I've got an edelbrock carb (pn 1405). I've removed the choke plate on the carb since I have no manual choke installed. I've replaced the plugs, wires and coil wire. Problem is still there so I am leaning towards timing.

According to the cast number on the block, the engine is from a 1979 something or other. The timing is set now on 10 btc. That is as close to tc ( turning the distributor counter clockwise) that I can get. If I turn the distributor clockwise, it does not take much and the car dies. The igniton coil is the same that is used in the fuel injected 4 cyl. Will that make a difference in anything, or other suggestions.

If I ever find who did this transplant, I going to punch them dead in the nose.

I would suggest, as a minimum, removing the dist and reinstalling it so that you have room to set the timing where you need to. This is easy, once you get used to the idea. You may have excessively limited advance available in the dist also.

Overall, it sounds like you need to install a complete set of Duraspark parts, box, coil and distributor. You may or may not need both the vacuum and mechanical advance. My street car still uses both, but my toy seems happy with 6 deg basic and about 26 deg of mechanical only. No vac. Both carbed.
