Timing Question

I recently removed the heads off my car due to a blown head gasket. During the install I rotated the crank in order to install the rockers. I am not sure if it is at TDC and I am certain that it is not in the same posion that it was when I removed the distributer. What is my best cours of action from here?
 
I will be in about the same situation in a few months, and I was just wanting to know if all I have to do is "get it close enough" and then use a timing light and turn the dizzy untill the engine shows 10 - 14* w/ the spout out, and I will be good?
 
I thought the number 1 piston was the passenger front. I understand that one needs to be at TDC, but how do I determine that, and then what? I have a timing light and I know how to set it normally.
 
put a finger over the #1 plug hole while turning over the motor..you should feel good compession on your finger when the balncer reaches #0..that will indicate your on the compression stroke. From there stab the dist in with the rotor pointed at #1 cylinder. This should put you in good position to throw on a timing light and rotate the dist to your desired #.

I tried this, and cannot seem to tell:bang: . Anyone got any ideas? I have it all put together, and am very gunshy about firing it up. After all the work I did I don't want to F@#! it up. I really want to be sure I am close before I start it and attempt to set the timing. I definitely have learned that after you complete the rockers to put it at TDC before you put on the lower intake.
 
TDC is pretty easy to find. A wooden dowel works well (wont nick anything in the motor). You dont have to be at EXACT top. Just keeps rotating till the dowel starts to fall slightly...Close enough to TDC that you wont hurt anything when you crank it over
 
My brother showed up today and we found TDC. It was very obvious while turning over the motor with him turning it over, set the distributer rotor to #1, fired it up and set the timing. It runs better than before. Thanks for the help!
