Timing Question?

I pulled the spout plug and set timing to 13 degrees then I shut it down and replaced the plug and tightened down the distributor. I started it back up and rechecked it and the timing was very retarded and bouncing all over the place. I restarted the process over again with the same results.anybody know what’s going on?

Computer controls timing.

Pulling the spout locks the base timing that you adjust. Once you put the spout in, computer has control again and it will be all over the place.

As long as it's where you want it with spout out, you are set

Ok it’s set at 13.then I put the spout back in and the timing goes way down.poor throttle response and surging.then with the spout in I had to advance to get it within range. I can’t do it precisely as it bounces between 10-16 degrees.is this ok to do so long as it’s not pinging? Or do I have bigger problems?

You should only adjust the timing with the spout pulled.
Was there a problem before the timing change?
Any codes?
Don't recall if you are required to reset the computer after a timing change, don't think you have to.

What happened was I had a code for the pip sensor so I just replaced the distributor and on reinstall I had to check timing. I suspected the timing was off prior to that and it was but after setting base timing it still seemed retarded so I advanced it within range. I was asking if anyone has adjusted timing with spout plug in after setting base timing with spout plug out?sorry for rambling.this is my first mustang and I didn’t realize how much work goes into these cars.

forget about what you did before
Get the car warmed up
Pull the spout out
set the timing to 10BTDC
Do a base idle reset

Sometimes you just have to start over, do what mike says above, drive it around then
Check for codes.
