Timing retards with SPOUT out...

I have a 2.3T Ranger and I am trying to get it to run right. The timing is retarding as the RPM's go up with the SPOUt out. It will drop a 20* just revving it to 4k. What wires in the TFI could cause this?

I swapped dizzies the other day and it is still doing it.

It should always be set at ten degrees base timing with the SPOUT disconnected. Im sure you already knew that, but from your explanation, it sounded like with the SPOUT disconnected, the timing was more than that

Yea. I have to set it at 35* base timing just to have it be at 10* when I am up in the RPM's. It drops like crazy. When the SPOUT is in, it will initially increase and then start to fall off.

That's odd for sure.
One thing that comes to mind.. the distributer shaft gear or the teeth on the aux shaft. If they are worn badly, your timing can jump around a lot, as it allows play forwards and backwords.

This sounds retarded, and not possible, but its like your SPOUT is doing the opposite of what it should....its like it has two wires that are hooked up backwards, so its doing the wrong thing.....but like i said thats retarded.

Set the base timing at 10 degrees with the spout unplugged...then plug it in. It may be pulling out timing simply because base timing is set so high

I did have it at 10* before I changed it. I did continuity tests on the wires and they all checked out okay. I am thinking maybe two wires are touching somewhere in the harness.

The problem is fixed.

The wire in the TFI that has power when the car starts was receiving power even after the car started. I disconnected it and now the timing is staying at 10* with the spout out.
