If I were to change my timing on my 96 GT what should I change it to? Also what kind of horsepower gains can I expect from changing my timing?

Advance it until you get detonation and then back it off a bit. The more advanced the higher octane you need. Also when advancing timing you can still get detonation on very hot days. Detonation is very bad for modular motors so err on the side of caution.

Is it worth chancing detonation of my engine for the power gains I will get? Also how much power will it add in general.

it doesnt add much but you can notice a little change

And you need to switch to higher octane gas.
