I was just curious if anyone knows of any fairly cheap modifications i can do to my v-6 to get some more ponies out of her. I have considered doing a 5sp swap to get rid of my automatic but i dunno how much that will cost. ANy ideas?

It's never going to come cheap. Exhaust, gears, CAI, and pulleys cost money so if you want to make your car faster be prepared to spend money. The swap you mention will cost you quite a bit so good luck.

I was quoted $2200 for a auto to 5 speed swap in Phoenix Arizona. I'll drive my stang until the auto drops and then spend the money for the swap. no way in hell will i ever own another damn automatic. Had my situation been different at the time I wouldn't have bought this one. I would've held out for a 5 speed... gawd, i'm so impatient it kills me.

If you do decide to go to the five speed conversion. MAKE SURE YOU GET A TREMEC OR SOMETHING!!!!!!! My stock five speed tranny fried with only 60000 miles on it. I dont know what the hell is up with my "new/was used" one now. I figured it was a fluke, had another put in, same stock oem, and something is screwy with it again at 95,000 miles. reverse is making a funny noise and the gears are shifting harder than usual. synchronizing is all messed up. I want to supercharge my car, but i'm scared the tranny won't handle it. So i'm going to make sure i have enough money to supercharge and put a new tranny in incase the supercharger kills my existing one. I love my five speed, but i never thought i would have these problems. I have an 1988 escort gt, cough, is a little ricey, but i have been way more abusive to that tranny and haven't had any problems. and it has 180,000 miles on the original motor and tranny. I know cars, and i baby them practically, far more then the average driver, or cough, my girlfriend.

well anyways, I have ever tore into a transmission before, so i am just taking others word that the tremec is far superior.

I have a very very good idea. Save money and sell your car. buy a 99 gt 5spd....pretty easy thing to do

RIGHT ON! AUTOS SUCK!!!!! (Too bad they cut off 5 spd verts when you got premium pkg in the 02 models...)

I wish my tranny would fall out so I could get ford to give me a 5spd.....

In the meantime....go to ebay, get yourself a good cheap CAI. $50. Works just as well as a $150 model. These are for people who have more brains than money

Go to TCOAA and read up on Jerry's mod for auto's. You might consider doing that, or just getting a better after market street/strip auto.

I put 4.10 gear in my 98 auto and wow, what a difference. Much better acceleration, but you have to be careful of WOT or it will redline real easy. I've also learned to get it to shift under hard acceleration when I wnat to just by playing with the gas pedal. Almost brings back my stick shifting memories of cars past, almost.

You mean there are people out there who can't shift an automatic with the gas pedal?

Well, down shifting is easy enough, just mash the gas pedal to the floor, but you'd be surprised how many people don't know how to make their cars do what they want them to do.

3.73`s and a T-lok plus a B&M shiftkit or Trans-go shift kit will be about the best mods to utilize the stock power. a set of pulleys and cold air kit and dual exhaust will add a little power and make it a little more fuel efficient. yo could have all of these mods for about $750.00 including installation if you shop around for the best prices. the above mods may shave 1 second off your car with practice but about .5 sec would be a guarantee.

the auto is just fine they just need a shift kit
