I have a 2001 Mustang GT with the stock 17'' bullit rims. I have stock tires on there. Whats the widest I can go on these rims without the tire over-hanging the rim. stock is 245/45/17..can I go with 275/40/17 tires ??

Now one more question i would like to add would it matter if the profile on the fron tires is 45 and the rear 40, by profile i mean height, (245/45...)

Doesn't matter, the last number is a percentage of the tire width so 275/40 has about the same sidewall height as a 245/45

275 * 0.4 = 111mm or 4" 1/2
245 * 0.45 = 110.25mm or 4" 1/2

I don't have personal experience, but I've heard that 275's on an 8" rim can lead to safety and handling issues. Just make sure you research it well before deciding. Also, if you decide on the 275's, you might want to go with Nitto's, because they are just a hair narrower than some other 275's out there. BTW, I really don't think that it would look bad at all. It always looks better to have too much sidewall bulge than to have the sidewalls sucked in too far (like a 275 on a 10.5" rim), IMHO.
