Does anyone know if you can get a title for a car if you purchased it from somone that didnt have a title?

Ive heard that non-titled cars are only good for parts or trailer queens...But Ive seen many No title stangs sell on ebay for high prices that I find it hard to believe that they wouldnt be able to drive them on the street..

Thanks
Matt

here in Louisiana in my area you can claim it after so many years and having proof or purchase they will reissue one

for other states i dont know check your local DMV

also heres a site that may be of intrest

www.broadwaytitle.com
its for lost or no title vehicles the going rate was cheap way back when but hope this helps

Just curious...why do you want a title? I bought my 66 without a title. I went to the DMV with the previous owner and we both signed a sheet of paper and they issued me some kind of waiver saying I didnt need a title. The car is registered, insured, and was driven on the road like that. I think if it is more than 10 years old, it is exempt from both mileage and a title. It probably varies from state to state though. are you in Ohio or GA?

I thought I would need a title to get tags and insurance for it. I found a good fastback in a field...I talked to the owners of the field and they said the guy died...So having the owner come with me is kind of out of the question..

Im in Ohio.

Buy the car if it fits your needs.
My owner of the 65 died (custom order in 65) and a records search showed no previous owners other than the PO. I was given the title on the sale reciept from his wife.
She was 82 years old and could not drive the four speed any more. She likes me, so is $400 too much for a 65 custom order out of the San Jose plant with a 289 A block, 4 speed, all gauges (tach and clock included), pony everything and the exhaust that has those little louvers.

You got lucky.

I just contacted the Title office for Ohio.
Under Ohio Law the owner has to assign the title.
The DMV wont let me get tags without a title..

Looks like I may be moving to a different state...

Contact the DMV in Alabama. They will issue a title to anyone with a bill of sale, signed by the 'owner' (if you know what I mean). Same in Florida, just need a bill of sale with the VIN, owners name, address, purchase price, and verification that it was owned by 'him'.

It varies by state (of course). Check your local laws. Here in South Carolina, if you don't have a title you don't own the car. It's that simple. The paper is more important than the steel. But they do have a procedure for getting a title on a car from another state, it's just a big hassle. My biggest complaint with their system is that I purchased a car new in another state, they call it used when I get a title here. Even though I'm the original owner. Bummer, as that lowers the resale.
