To change black tranny fluid or not to change that is the question!

Maybe off topic, but i changed the tranny fluid (it was burned, and sort of grey in color) in my '95 Explorer and shortly after that, the tranny started to shift real funny and pop in and out of overdrive constantly. I put LUCAS tranny treatment in it (stuff is like honey) and it has worked great for 10K miles!...firms up shifts, etc. This is not going to fix a potential transmission problem, but it usually buys you time to pony up the cash to rebuild/swap. I got the cash ($700) to do mine, but i am going to see how long the LUCAS works for. You can find it at Autozone...thats where i bought mine

Change the fluid!!!

If the tranny is going to fail, keeping the crappy, old fluid in it is not going to keep it running. You're just delaying the inevitable, and not for very long.

I have seen many times, personally, by changing the fluid in a tranny (Flush or drop the pan and replace filter) actually made the trans inoperable. What happens when the fluid hasn't been changed in a while, it builds up with metal particals and this is actually what is keeping the clutches in the auto grabbing when pressure is applied. If you take out the fluid, along with the metal, it could make the trans not work at all. Just food for thought, but you should change it. If you do, and it stops working.. oh well... It was just time before it blew up anyway.
