stupid rule why destroy the motors on the cars turned in on the rebate offer ? why not give them to people who are out of work ? what possible purpose does it serve to sabotage the cars & trucks I saw some really nice cars ruined why not give the to someone if not here then is a 3 rd world country a missionary outfit , it’s the dumbest thing I ever saw ? sell them just the wrecking a perfect car or truck with our tax dollars is the worst waste I have ever seen....... who is steering the ship ??????????????????

if we sold/gave them to other people who NEED them, that would defeat the purpose of the program..........to get cars with bad gas miallage off the road and save the plantet!!!!!

This is by far one of the worst ideas I have seen. Not only is it taking MY tax dollars, but it is destroying perfectly good cars. If theses cars make that much pollution and are that bad for our environmennt, then what do they do with them after they are traded in?????? shoot them off into space??? No, they get sent to a junkyard were they might be used for scrap, but most likely will end up in a landfill somewhere. These people are out of their minds!!!! Also, isnt this like the houseing crisis on a lower level????: You cant afford a new car, so we will give you money for your old PERFECTLY GOOD ONE, you get a brand new car and wait, oh yea, monthly payments! I cant wait to see half these cars get repossesed after these people cant afford the payments. I can already see the Gov letting the people take 6, 8, or 10 months to not pay before they will let them get REPO'd.

Makes me sick

The cash for clunkers thing pisses me off. It's not going to help anything. All it's going to do is get people into debt with car loans that shouldn't have them. Sure, they'll have a nice, new, fuel efficient car. But a year from now, the bank is going to tow it out of their driveway because they haven't made a payment in 10 months.

Think the mortgage crisis, only with cars...

Add to that, the destruction of them, as you mentioned...the whole thing is a joke.

The only reason that they can is because of our environmental and labor laws. Its not a level playing field by far.

i agree, trading in a perfectly old car for a new one cause it gets bad gas milage is dumb. All the money these people are gonna save on gas will just go to their monthly payments. and as race-stang said, they prolly will get repoed. but then who cares, at least we have the decision whether or not to trade it in. If you ask me, if it passes smog. leave it the F be.

That's not necessarily true. I know firsthand a lot of people taking advantage of this program who are making out quite well. They have the financial means to buy a new(er) car but just haven't until this program came around because they 1.) owned a car they just can't sell privately, and 2.) weren't happy with what a dealer offered on trade-in for their own car.

And now they get an instant $4500 plus a lot of dealers are matching that with incentives of their own. So right there is a legit chance of getting $9000 off the price of a new car. Go out and buy an $20K focus...and you have a new car for $11K and sub $200/month payments.

My father and uncle have both used their program to ditch their older trucks and get into newer cars.

If i still had my Mark 8...worth maybe $1000 in private sale at the time, i would have taken advantage of it and gone after a new Fusion. $9K off is hard to ignore.

Not everyone who is taking advantage of this program is a welfare mom who gets $100/week and drives a $500 POS jumping into a $35K car. A lot of these trade-ins are not primary vehicles...but maybe 2nd or 3rd cars or hand-me downs where the situation proves very tempting to jump into something new.

Granted, i HATE what they do to the cars after they get them.
