To port, or not to port, that is the question.

I have a spare engine laying around and have contemplated porting the intake and heads on several occasions. I realise that there would be an improvement in power, but is it significant enough to bother? I dont have the funds to purchase anything, but I have all the tools and parts to get the job done. Input would be appreciated.

Really it depends on how upset you would be if you ended up completely trashing the parts.

Porting into a water jacket would not help power.

I have not yet tried to port my own heads or intake, as I have yet to find the time and enough info for me to feel comfortable ripping into perfectly good heads.

Maybe I could practice on some damaged heads? I bet a junk yard would have some cracked or otherwise damaged E7 heads.

I got a set of good used 305 heads for free just for that reason...and if it works out good I will put them on the 350 in my truck and up the compression and flo a little bit.

thats kind of the gameplan, I can pick up gt-40 heads and a cobra/upper both for around 450-500$ but I dont have the cash, and I was thinking for just a little more pep in the meantime. Throw some roller rockers on and Im pretty sure I could open up 30-40 hp, maybe throw in a cam at the same time...

as we all well know the e7's do not flow very well.. so porting / polishing them will greatly help flow.. i say go for it. and when your in the exhaust port.. make sure to get rid of that ugly, flow restricting smog hump.. grind it smooth and flush with the rest of the runner.. that will greatly improve exhaust flow
