To spool or not to spool?

Hey guys, I am going to be rebuilding my rearend soon, and I was going to just go with a rebuilt f-150 trac lock, but I was thinking, I rarely drive my car on the street, maybe 20 miles a month just crusing to the local hang out if that. I was wondering if I should just put a spool in it instead. Do any of you that have spools in you rearend ever drive them on the street, and how is it. Just wondering. Spools are cheap, and the car is a quarter mile pounder most of the time. Thanks.

if your car is not a daily driver i say go for it with the spool. the spool is great at the track. driving around town with mine, is not that bad. my car is not a daily driver so it does not bother me. when i put mine in, i mostly used the car at the track and to go to cruise night. the only that sucks is making sharp turns, and turing in into tight spaces.

I spool alot of mud trucks - that is the general rule for racing, wheather mud or on the track. As for any street use - you can get away with it pretty easy - but you have to watch out for sticky tires and any kind of powered turning - snap the axles pretty easy especialy with drag radials. It can be done, but woudl not advise it for any street use.

Thanks guys. I did a search, probably should have done that first, my bad , and there is a lot of concoversy(sp?) on this subjuct, about 50/50 for and against a spool in a car that is driven even a little on the street. I think I might give it a try with some 31 spline axles, and 4.30 gears. Thanks for the input.

A spool is not going to offer you much over a well built traction lock. Given that, unless you're planning lots of time at the track and just don't want to rebuild traction locks every year, then there's no real advantage to going to a spool. It kind of makes the controversy about whether or not a spool is streetable a moot point.
