Update: Tomorrow, it begins...

Tomorrow i begin my RSD project. Ive read most threads on here regarding custom builds however i am curious to know of any last minute tips and things to look out for when building this thing. thanks!

i can do a full write up if youd like :)

as for now...

i went to home depot today and got:

1. 3...yes three 2x4 1/2 inch thick pieces of MDF ($5.97 ea.) (i can explain this later, as of yet im not really sure if im gunna need it but i will keep you posted)
2. 80 Grit Sandpaper (another $5 i think)
3. 2 Heavy-duty hinges (from the cabinet isle...plan to install them reversed to hide them) ($3 ea.)
4. Clear primer/sealant for the MDF...the thing about cutting MDF that most people arent aware of is that by cutting it u are exposing untreated wood...being that this wood is gunna be in ur car it will collect moisture..once this happens it starts to release fa-mal-da-hyde (sp?)...since its in a small enclosure (a car) its not good stuff to breathe in :)..this cost me like $9
5. 4 large home depot cardboard boxes to use as templates ($3 ea.)

plus or minus a $1 here or there it totaled at home depot to be 51 bucks

at the point i am at now im making cardboard templates which is the worst part...i am going about this by using mechanics wire and/or metal hangers

ill make a more complete write up later on

P.S. dont assume that once u get the pattern for one side that itll work for the other, ur gunna have to pattern out the whole area..unless i just suck my passenger template doesnt fit in its reversed form on the drivers side...o well

P.P.S I havent bought any carpeting or anything yet as i dont know what id like to do just yet

Yeah, that does sound like a good plan. What you said about the freshly cut wood releasing da funk ... makes me remember when we made a box for my brother's car back in the day and it made the whole car permanently stank. Now I know why .. always thought it was just mold or something but the box being cut and not 'sealed' makes good sense.

The carpeting is the issue I have had .. what type? color? etc... The seat part (where your ass goes) seems pretty straight-forward. Good work in progress write up though .. keep us posted and if I think of any ideas I'll post em. :nice:

well you really have 3 options:

1. Keep it uncarpeted and paint it/have a shop paint it for u like a nice stencil and clear coat it (might be a bad idea to clear it with glare at night from other peoples headlights from oncomming traffic)

2. Find carpeting that closely resembles your interior's carpeting (can achieve this by going to a few different carpeting stores OR get the carpeting that is used in custom audio system builds, i have no idea what its called

3. Find a pleather that closely resembles your interior
