Toploader 4spd Worth????

I still want a 4-speed to replace my 3-speed but I have yet to find anyone nearby that has one. It's not worth enough for me to give David Kee over a grand for 1 extra gear either, but everytime someone here has one for sale they live all the way over in CA while I'm in NH.

I could only imagine what shipping would run me.

What's your Zip code so I can get a shipping quote?
Also, is it a wide ratio or a close ratio? I assume wide...

Lastly, is there a difference between a 4sp toploader from 66 and one from 67 or 68? I don't want to buy one that'll disintegrate if I put it behind a stroked 351W later on.

It weighs about 95lbs and the bellhousing is really heavy duty, I will take $400.00 plus shipping....
Better add about 45 lbs to that estimate. I've shipped one and had one shipped to me and one weighed in at 125 lbs w/o the bell, the other weighed about 135 lbs with the aluminum bell. They can go UPS, but you'll need to completely drain the gear oil, and pack it in a heavy duty box with a solid bottom. I use 1/2 plywood in the bottom and duct-tape the transmission to the plywood so it can't roll around. There's no difference between the small block Toploaders as far as strength, they'll all handle anything a 351W ( stroked or otherwise) will dish out. I ran these behind a low riser 427 with 2-4 bbls back in the 80's without breaking one

Thanks for the help D.Hearne! I may need more from you in a minute...

347Fastback, I searched the ID for "RUG-AD" and it says on www.4speedtoploaders.com that it is a "1968 Mustang 390, 28-spline, close ratio" transmission.

I have a 289 now and will be upgrading to a stroked 351W in not too long. I'm looking for a wide ratio toploader because apparently it's good for a smallblock?? I'm wondering from you experts what you think I should get for my 289 now and future 408W project...?? close or wide? Wide is better for street and close is better for strip? My car is driven in the spring/summertime here and there so it's not like a daily driver but I don't want to be burning out everytime I engage 1st gear either.

One last thing, I assume then that your bellhousing fits a 390 and not a 289 or 351W??? You haven't specified that I can see..

I'm all for this if everything is alright but at the moment it looks like it might not be. Just shoot me an email @ [email protected] so we can sort this out.

Thanks,

Most everybody prefers the wide ratio, because of it's lower 1st gear ( 2.78 vs 2.32 for the close) If your gonna run lower rear gears, and your building a torqey motor, then the close will be fine. Most of the big block Toploaders were close ratio. 347 said his came from a 65 Stang. they didn't come with big blocks. But if his is a 68 390 transmission, you need to watch which bell you choose to use, the 390 specific Toploaders had a shorter input shaft which, if used with the wrong length bell, will prevent the input from reaching into the pilot bearing/bushing leaving it unsupported when you shift. This will eventually leads to the input bearing breaking. This will also happen if you try to use a Toploader with an SROD/Tremec bellhousing. The Toploader will bolt up to it, but the input shaft is too short to work with this bell.

Anytime :nice: Keep an eye out for one on ebay or the classifieds here on StangNet, there's always soem for sale. Just make sure the seller lets you see the internals before parting with your money. They are fairly easy to rebuild, and kits run about $150 with new bearings, blocker rings, seals and other stuff i can't recall. I've done a couple in the last two years.
