will my 4x4 1998 chevy s10 pulled my car about 2 hours too and from the track with no problem using a car trailer or is it to hard on the trans. motor has 82,000 miles mostly highway and the motor is a 4.3 vortech v6 what u think
Probably a bad idea. If you are towing a tounge based trailer with a 2900+ lbs. car on it you would first need an actual trailer hitch. Not the bumper. Trailer would need brakes. S10 would need a tranny cooler at least. Maybe even steeper gears.
If it is an automatic you can just go ahead and forget about the idea. If it's a manual you MIGHT be able to get away with it. Keep in mind that the cargo capacity for an S10 is something like 1300lbs and you want it to pull 3000.
The tow rating with the factory tow package is around 5300 pounds for your truck. A car trailer is usually around 2000 pounds. Most Mustangs are around 3200-3300 pounds. You'd be right at the maximum with a well equiped S-10.
You could probably do it with a tow dolley, but that creates another problem in itself. I towed my friend's car on a dolley (Chrysler Sebring) with my Olds Bravada and it did alright, but you'd have to take off the driveshaft on your car to do that. If you were to break an axle, you'd have to tow it from the rear wheels, which isn't really preferred either. Could you rent a truck to do it? I bet a full-size truck couldn't be more than $50 a day to rent.
Or the next time a friend or someone you know with a full-size truck comes over , take them for a ride around the block in the stang. Then say "man I wish I could get it to the track to see what it really does". Then offer to pay for gas , and if they are interested in cars at all they probably wouldn't mind. Works with my boat most of the time. I just need to get the boat to the dock and we all have fun. I pay for gas in the boat and they have a great time just by towing my boat to the water. It's a win , win situation.
Yes it will work. However you need to plan it well and exercise some caution.
I would absolutely get trailer brakes. They have saved me a couple times. Your S10 is going to be light in the rear and difficult to control under braking without the trailer brakes.
Your S10 auto trans should have an overdrive off button or control, so that you can tow in direct or 3rd. Use this when towing. Dont even think about using od.
If you accelerate slowly and don't dog it, it should work. I tow with my 97 F150 4x4, with a 4.6 auto. It has big tires and a lift, and will not hold a steady speed in od on even level ground, so I use od off to tow. Towed 2400 miles this way to pick up a tractor.
A trans cooler is also not a bad idea. I am used to flat areas, like coastal SC, and hills make it a lot harder.
I have a friend that has towed a car to the track and back with a S-10, don't know if it was the best idea but the truck pulled it there and back with no issues.
And you are more then likely going to get a lot of **** from the Chevy guys when you show up towing a Ford.....
