Getting close to rebuild time of the rear and am going to be putting in a set of 3.73's, complete bearing kit, and rebuilding the trac lok, all with new frpp parts.

My question is with the stacking of the friction/splined disks in the trac lok. I have seen the "alternative" method from stock and was wondering if it is really worth it. There is more friction discs, but I would be using an already worn out one for the fourth, and I would be leaving out a splined disc.

Is there any durability issues with this? Significant locking difference? As of now the car could basically be considered stock but motor is definately in the future with at most a set of drag radials. What order would you recomend? Anything to watch out for in the process? Thnx for any help.

This website has some nice info and a good write up on rebuilding a trac loc. Pretty good website for doing anything on the 8.8" rear.

Link removed due to virus.

Bill,

Thanks for the heads up and the other link.

I personally can't speak from experience about the alternative stacking method but I have a few friends that have done it with no issues. I have to rebuild the diff in my 93 so I plan on using the alternative stacking method myself

I have rebuilt them with the alternate stacking method for years. You will get better longevity and better lock up. I have one living behind my buddy's supercharged 97 Cobra with over 500 rwhp. It's survived 2 plus years of street and drag abuse.

I also have done the alternative stacking. C-P-C-P-C-P-C and both tires spin equally, the black marks start and finish the same, thier density is the same, IOW exact copies.

c=what and p=what?
Sorry for my ignorance, but I would like to make sure your c's and p's match mine.

Mine have worked with the stock rebuild. I think some attention paid to shimming the side gears correctly will work to do the same as the extra clutch. I could not put my spider gears in with the original shims. When I changed them, it all fit nicely and worked fine.

So you did or did not alternate discs? I have a 31 spline T-Loc with 4,500 miles on it waiting to go in my 04 GT.

I rebuilt mine with alternating clutch/steel/clutch/steel/clutch/steel/clutch

It definately holds much tighter. I packed them in there so tight, I had to take the thurst washers off the spider gears just to get them in. I rebuilt mine without the s-spring to get better cornering (trick I learned at corner-carvers) and used mobil-1 75w-90 with no friction modifier.

Altogether, much better lockup and always 2 black marks.
