I have found an early 70's truck with a traction lok axle code. It has the 9 1/2" axle carrier. Did some trucks come with the 9 1/2" axle carrier? If this is a trac lok unit is the unit the same size as one from a 9"? I know that the ring gear is larger.

I have to assume that an 8" trac lok unit is smaller than a 9" unit. Is this correct?

Thanks in advance for any information on this subject.

The 8 is smaller than the 9. The 9 1/2 won't work in the 9.

You guys may have already answered my question but I'm not sure. I don't want to use the housing or the gears. If I get the 9 1/2" carrier and take the trac lok unit itself out, (without the ring gear) can I put a 9" gear on and use it in a 9" carrier.

The answer is "NO." The rear is actually a 9 3/8." The complete pumpkin would work in a 9" housing with slight modification and using 31 spline axles, but 9" gears won't fit the 9 3/8" carrier.
