Trak loc Help needed

i am in the middle of rebuilding my trakloc and changing gears to 373's

When I took the clutch packs apart the order was F-SS-F-SS-F and a 65 thou shim for both sides. I Rebuilt the clutch packs exactly like they were and, I can't get the spider gears back in, They are so tight. Any idea's why

The replacement clutches are probably just a little thicker than stock. Or if you soaked your friction plates, that's probably the reason. They do swell a little bit after you soak them. Just cut back on the shim till it'll go together. I shim them as tight as I can get them while still being able to rotate the spiders in.

Does the order sound right to you F-SS-F-SS-F - shim

The new steels measure 0.080 the old ones are 0.075
I tried a 0.040 shim still very tight, I also soaked them in friction modifier for 15 min or so

You can reuse an old friction plate on each side and reorder the stack to F-S-F-S-F-S-F and get firmer operation out of the traction loc. Most everybody on here will tell you to do that, I know I did, and it works great. Make sure to shim the gears as tight as you can without causing any binding and you won't have any problems. Start with small shims and work your way up until you can't get the spider gears back in.

Make sure to break in the rear end properly after the rebuild! Good luck!

I use the alternating stacking also like you said. Works good.

Did the same, and my posi works flawlessly. I thought you were going to go with the alternate stacking order after the last thread you posted? Like EMW150 said, you will need to put progressively smaller shims in until it goes back together. Try to shim it as tight as possible. Are you setting up the new pinion yourself after changing the gear?

I also moddied my clutch pack in my rear end. Worked great. I had to squease the s clip with a pair of vise grips on 1 side. It was enough to get the s clip started then i tapped it in with a hammer and a block of wood.
