Tranny fluid change? or Tranny going?

I have just noticed that my tranny is "acting up" ....when driving under normal conditions and reaching about 65MPH it shifts and then down shifts immediately....giving a sudden jerk..I have 142,000 miles on it and to my knowledge fluid has never been changed...I have put 80,000 on it myself. Fluid level is full ....maybe alittle on the brown side in color...And I also have noticed my shifter indicator has become a little offset..doesn't go completely into "D" it is kinda in between "N" and "D". I noticed all of this after driving it to a location...parking...and this all took place on my departure.Everything seemed fine on the initial trip.So my question is....change the fluid or look further into tranny repairs?

Whoa, change the fluid first. That's the thing that scares me the most about auto trans. I always have Ford check it when they do oil changes. A $90 flush is better than paying $2k for a new trans.

You wouldn't necessarily have to buy new. You could always find one off a wrecked stang and put it on.

you could even have yours rebuilt, which if it needs a tranny thats what i would do. but change the fluid first..
rebuilding your tranny insures fitiment when you put it back in the car..
the junkyard...you never know what you get..bad idea..
have yours rebuilt if its needed, you will also have the correct tranny accesories,
switches, mount, that you know are still there unlike a j-yard trans..
sometimes it better to spend the extra cash then to half ass..

Actually tranny has been fine since that incident ...I think maybe my shifter was not fully engaged in "D" properly....but as far as tranny fluid change I have heard too many negative things ....some say no never do it...others say just drop the pan and refill fluid...but almost all are against full system flush.I work at an auto parts store so I have been questioning my local shop owners...which leaves me kinda hanging.
Anybody got any input

Never change the tranny fluid? Yeah, that makes as much sense as never changing the motor oil on a engine. Hell, why change the clutch plate? Just shift harder, it will get in there.

Maybe I was misunderstood...not never....but just change the fluid after dropping the pan....not the full flush with chemicals flushed into the system....just going on what guys that do it for a living are saying...
