That's usually what I do, it is easier for me to just fill it by taking the shifter off and pouring it in up top till it starts to leak out of the fill hole in the tranny. It takes just under 3 quarts. and make sure you plug up the drain plug first before starting to pour, I know it is a no brainer, but you never know.
