please help ... tranny problems


ok so i have a 97 gt vert auto trans ... and today, the tranny at full throttle wont up shift out of 1st gear and it is shifting eraticicly at 1/4-1/2 throttle? even on the freeway at 60 mph when you floor it it just bounces off the rev limiter and no down shift. the mods on this car are basic 3.73's full exhaust pullies etc. my question is ... is this a common problem? and if so what was the cause of the problem i just did a tranny flush and a pan drop 300 miles ago also. i really want to drop the auto and get a manual. any sugestions? and who sells the conversion kit to do the swap i already have a t-45 laying around. :nice: thanks for the help i appreciate it.

Check the ATF level very carefully (although it sounds like a broken spring or stuck accumulator).

"Transmissions 101" in the Tech Articles/Transmissions section of TCCoA.com has a troubleshooting section and I seem to recall the problems you describe being mentioned although I do not remember the specifics.

The pre-98s have some parts that are not as robust as they should be (accumulator pistons, springs). These parts are easy to upgrade. Check out the "jerry mod" shift kit write-up while you are browsing all the chapters -- there is a goldmine of good info there.
 
If I remember right, the tranny you have is electric. Run the codes and see if you are getting a "low voltage from Throttle Position Sensor" code. If you are then your TPS is not telling your tranny the correct info and it will not be sure when to shift. Personal experience on that one...

What theese guys suggested is good advice. The accumulator pistons, transmission fluid level, and TPS voltage are all possible suspects. My suspicion is the accumulator piston though more than anything.

How many miles are on this transmission, do you have the o/d light flashing, and what is the coloration of the transmission fluid ? To be more specific, is there any metal gritt in the tranny fluid and is the transmission fluid darker than dark red ?
