Tranny Help!!

ok, so i have a 2000 v6 auto (4r70w?) the shifter does not move smoothly between gears (linkage?) and when I shift into drive at cold start up, it takes a second to engage. If it's super warm out and I have been driving, sometimes I have to shift into low, then into drive or it won't engage. I'm thinking rebuild/replace time. The car has 247xxx on it, engine runs good and strong, everything else is fine. Im not getting rid of the car, although we have a beauty 2010 gt at work for sale I might be picking up as well. My question is... differences between a v8/v6 tranny. I've been looking around and it seems they are the same. I assumed the v8 had different gears. I found a v8 tranny for $300 out of a car with 53k on it and has a 90 day warr. should I look into this or do I have to get one from a v6? thanx for any help....

FWIIW, prob the most important difference between the automatic transmission on a 2000 V6 and a 2000 GT is the bolt pattern of the bell housing.

A 4R70W from a V6 will NOT bolt up to a modular V8! Count the number of bolts on the starter. A modular transmission has 3. The others have 2.

They may have the same designation but they are not the same.

For any automatic with shifting problems, the first thing anybody is going to ask about is the condition and level of the fluid.

just changed the fluid 6 weeks ago, using merc V. I bought it used and had slight slipping on hard accelerating, been progressivly getting worse. The tranny cooler in the radiator was leaking, took care of that at the same time. I'm basically trying to find the diff between rebuilding mine or just swapping another. are the bellhousings removable (I had a ranger that the bell housing was integrated into the tranny)? If so, I can use the housing of my current, correct? If not, sounds like I'm better off doing a rebuild. I've looked into the manual swap, but considereing how much work is involved, I'd rather just keep the auto and have my next be stick. Thanx again for any help...

Take a look at the 4R70W case. Do you see a seam between the bell housing and the body of the transmission?

If the swap could easily be accomplished by a bell housing swap, I would have mentioned it. The case is all one casting.

If asking for an opinion, rebuild the unit you have. A salvage unit is a crap shoot that may not be any better than what you have. Besides, if you rebuild what you have you don't have to worry about speed sensors or wheither or not it will fit.

not to sound like an ass, but didn't need the attitude with the answer, although I appreciate the info. Havn't been up under there enough to notce yet for the bellhousing, that's why I asked. As far as internals, shift kits (j-mod sounds like the best for my year) should be the same correct? Is this preferred over a tuner? Looking to order a tuner with some basic mods when I put it up this winter. Again, thanx for any info...

Besides, this is the tech section. Some of what should be going on here is to teach ppl how to fix their own cars. Before teaching can start, some engagement of the student's brain has to occur. In a perverse sort of way, I'm trying to get you the think through the questions before asking.

I'm not one of those ppl that believes there are no stupid questions. There are stupid questions when the questions are asked without forethought. So maybe I hit you just a little too hard.

But look at the quality of the response! Accurate. Timely. Great value for the $$ spent wouldn't you agree?

The forums are filled with tons of post where ppl are assuming that because it's called an 4R70W, that any MY can be swapped with anyother MY. It's just not true across the board. Some swaps are easier than others.

But, within the same MY, the internals of the 4R70W are almost exactly the same. The differences are usually very minor. Since the 4R70W is an electronically controlled transmission, the PCM programming actually has more to do with the "feel" of the transmission.

I encourage everyone to do their homework. The Forums can not take the place of a professionally written manual. Nor should everything read be taken in 100%. Use your brain. Do the home work. The end result will be a greater chance of sucess.
