ok i've got an 87 gt. i'm certain the 5 speed transmission has never been rebuilt, but its never given me any problems till recently. It shifts alright till i get on it real hard and try to grab 2nd gear. CLANK! A buddy of mine told me it could be the synchronizers going out. Also, when I'm parked in a confined area I can hear it humming until I push the clutch in bout half way. I noticed that today. I'm in the process of building a 347 with a c6 tranny so if this is a big enough problem due to wear and tear i'll probly just say heck with it for now and hope it'll last a little longer. I pulled up on the clutch pedal to make sure there was no slack. what do you guys think?

Well, the humming most likely is throw out bearing related. A clunking usually isn't synchronizers. Synchronizers will start grinding and make it hard to get into gear.

I agree, bad sincros will grind, not clunk.

i'd look at your driveshaft u joints. Also be sure your trans to bell and bell to engine bolts haven't worked themselves loose.

as for the t/o bearing noise, if it's a squeak it may just be an adjustment, you can try tightening the adjustment a little.

Same thing happens to me and I've got a brand new T-5 in there, so I doubt it's tranny related. My friend thinks its normal. He's got a z28 six-speed and it does the same thing, but he'll be replacing the clutch soon so we'll be able to tell if thats the culprit. Let me know if you figure it out first.

if it is a real quick grind that sounds like a clunk, then it is the synchos, because mine also went from 2nd to 3rd first, then somehow moved from 1st to 2nd, then 2nd died and i had to replace the whole thing. just my $.02
