Tranny sometimes pops out of 2nd....

Sometimes when I'm driving and I downshift into 2nd... it feels like its in gear and I go to let out on the clutch and it pops out. And once it was in gear and i let out on the clutch and accelterated a little and it popped out of gear. Its a brand new tranny.... I have a hurst short throw shifter with adjustable stops, think the stops just need adjusted? The shop said that they didn't mess with them, but we did awhile back when we had to bad tranny in because we were told that might be what caused 1st on the old tranny to pop out. That ofcourse didn't fix the problem on the old one. Anyway... I'm going to take it back down to the shop and have them check that and the clutch linkage. Second opinions?

The shifter probably needs adjusted anyway. First check to make sure the shifters not hitting body parts.

Eos , what tranny do you have? Did you get a T-5,or the heavy duty T-5
I've had both in my II, and there are a lot of probables for the problem you are having. Try the simplest fixes first like clutch cable adjustment, and your shifter stops. Not long after I got my H.D. T-5 the same thing started happening to me, I found out that the bearing behind the input shaft inside the tranny had too much slop in it, I replaced it for about $10 and haven't had any more problems since that was over a year ago. BTW the HD T-5 has a different bearing than the regular T-5. It is a caged roller , the reg. gets individual little roller pins( no cage or holder for them)

I have a heavy duty T5 by ford racing. It shouldnt need ANYTHING fixed on it... it came out of a freaking box from the factory.

Then try to see if you can get it dialed in by adjusting the shifter, but it should be fine its new.

Eos...It might just be a mis adjustment of a linkage. I highly doubt that it is a input shaft bearing cause that would usually cause other gears to pop out to. If its not the shifter or the linkages i would say its the clutching teeth on the second gear assembly. This is what keeps the transmission from popping out of gear. Ive takin apart 4 brand new ford t5 in transmission class and two of them had worn clutching teeth on a gear. hopefully this isnt your problem. I know how it is to fix something and then have something else break right after you get it on the road. i hope yopu figure it out.

Well it has no problem going into gear no grinds or anything when it does go. I think its just the shifter and that I'm not used to it anymore. If something was wrong with the tranny Ford would definetly be giving me a brand new one and paying for my labor. That is BS.

Yes, and I think you answered your question in your post.

Sounds to me like the stops are preventing the hub sliders from fully engaging the gears. It's pretty simple to adjust, and should be outlined in the installation sheet, if you bought the shifter new.

T5s don't have "linkage". They're an internal rail, like the IIs original trans.

I looked this one up in my Chilton manual under trans diagnosis,
it says also could be a weak spring retainer spring for the gear.
In any case,have the shop look at it again.

I talked to the mech today about bringing it in tomorrow. He assured me that thats all it should be because they didn't mess with the shifter adjustments while it was there. He said he would take care of it for me.

mine did too, but thats what MY fix was. When I called the supplier about it back then They weren't sold with a warranty. I sincerely hope the shifter adjustment fixes yours.

Since you snapped a joint I suggest you get the power train alignment checked.

From what I've seen , people have done all sorts of wierd **** to get the trans in the car without paying attention to the overall alignments. Subsiquent mechanics assume the installer got it right.

And so it goes.

I don't carry a tote card so I don't know the health of your rear suspendsion. Not this one :

The one in the car, the condition of your springs and rubbers, a uncontrooled climbing of the pinion could create stresses resulting in the premature breaking of the connection .

I am having this same problem with my trans. in my 76 cobra, but mine is the stock 4 spd. from ford and the same thing happened in my 81 just before it went out on me, except it was reverse in that one that always popped out, (and plus i think i broke that one becuz i would hold it in reverse and let out the clutch and one day i broke the linkage inside the trans. so i had to replace it.) any advice??

The II is the most reliable car we have right now! My dads truck has the alternator going bad in it right now and the eclipse still needs more front end work. The II is running bright and perky. Thats a first!
