I have a 70 mustang and I'm interested in changing from my C4 to a top loader 4 sp. I dont however know what amount of work is involved in the installation especially in the clutch and pedal assembly. let me know. thanks in advance.
The hardest part of going from a auto to a manual is adding in the clutch pedal and clutch linkage (if you go with the linkage set up). You'll need to drop the mounting braket so you can pull the old pedal out, and install the different break and new clutch pedal. I think you also need to punch out a hole is the firewall for the linkage, but there should already be a indent were it needs to go, and a good hard hit will a hammer will pop the piece out. You'll have to cahnge your flywheel and possiably your start too. What year is the engine? Other then that, it's just a matter of getting the right crossmebe slip yoke (if it is different).
Originally it used mech. linkage. I would recommend using a hyd (as they are the best), then a cable, and lastly mech. Hyd cost a lot to do, but it works the best. Cable clutchs are nice and smooth, and mech....well, I just don't like them. There is clearence problems with headers, they can go out on pretty easily (with my experence at least) and they are not a nice smooth operation. Double check this, but your motor should have a thread hole on the driverside of the block for a piviot shaft to screw into for a mech linkage set up.
