trans getting stiff grinds reverse

please forgive me for being a newb i have to start somewhere, but this is my first mustang and i have only had it for 3 weeks now but my question is the trans in it was always a little stiff but now its getting hard to get into gear and it is grinding reverse almost every time. it has the original clutch in it is all i can really say and it has a pro 5.0 short shift installed but i was wondering if it was my clutch going out or if its my trans. or something else entirely. i would have searchd to look around for similar threads but i am at work and in a bit of a hurry. thanks for any help.

What do y ou mean by "the trans in it was always a little stiff but now its getting hard to get into gear and it is grinding reverse almost every time."

Most T5's will grind going into reverse becasue reverse is not synchronized. If you push the clutch in and wai ta few seconds you should be able to go in just fine with little, most often no, grinding.

Your description of the problem is kinda vague.

Try putting it in 5th. before you put it in reverse. Reverse does not have synchros. If you are having trouble shifting between other gears, it may be time for a new clutch cable. Only use a Ford non adjustable cable, available for under $50 online. The dealer will charge an outrageous price for the same part. You may want to get an aftermarket quadrant and firewall adjuster if you don't already have one.

yeh sorry for being vegue on what stiff was i do mean it is harder to shift out of a gear and into nutral and i talked to the guy i bought it from and it is a stock clutch / clutch cable and the car has 77,000 miles on it so it is probly a good time to change it out. thanks for the help.

I had the same problem on mine. Only mine has 191,000 miles on the original clutch and cable. The clutch is not slipping at all, even with a leaking rear seal, believe it or not. It was getting hard to pull out of one gear and into the next, but was not grinding. I replaced the cable and quadrant with a Ford cable and Maximum Motorsports quadrant and firewall adjuster. It shifts like butter now.
