hey, im looking at purchasing a 90LX 5.0 off someone, and out of all the other ones i drove this one was by far the best riding, best sounding (meaning it sounded healthy) my only issue in buying this is that sometimes it would pop out of 1st gear at low speeds between2-5mph after that she's fine, any ideas on what this could be?
thanks

Either, the shifter stop is set too far forward not allowing the gear to fully engage, or the dog teeth on the actual first gear are damaged and not seating fully in the 1/2 synchro slider allowing it to pop out under load. That would require a trans rebuild (w/parts not normally included in typical rebuild kit)

Hope it's the first one.

I had issues with a 91 that I had with the shifter popping out of gear. It would only do it when I was not on the gas pedal and right after I started driving the car. After about 1/2 hour it would stop. I found that when it was cold the lower shifter boot applied enough force to the handle to pop it out of gear if there was no load on the transmission. I modified the shifter boot a little and that stopped the problem. I am not saying that there weren't problems with the trans that could have also been contributing factors but its a cheap and easy place to start looking at first.

thanks, yeah i hoping it was something easy, but i figured it was the dog teeth on 2nd, after all 2nd and 3rd get the most abuse when your slammin the gears. i know how i could do a trans rebuild, but i just dont want to buy a car that needs a trans rebuild

It could be 2 things the actual gear teeth could be cracked or chipped or the 1, 2 slider keys are cracked or missing. Either way it will need to be rebuilt.

aftermarket shifter? I had the stops adjusted too far in and would sometimes pop the car out of gear.

hey, i opted to get another one i looked at this one has no major trans problems was about the same price but a vert....but was easy the cleanest one i looked at. this one just seems like sometimes the syncros aren't lining up all the time and takes a little force to get it into gear, but no grinding unless i try to put it in reverse with out lining it with 5th gear first. but other then that its not a bad ride
