I am pretty sure my C4 is toast. I would like to be driving this car soon and was wondering what's the best way to go to get it up and running quickly.

Rebuild ? (I'd have to pay someone to do it...I don't have the time or the skills)
Get a rebuilt C4 ?
Switch to new style tranny...? Overdrive would be nice for the highways....

This car will be for cruising only and trying to do this on a budget.

I think your "best" bet would be to go with a TCI tranny. You really can't beat it for the price. Depending on how much power your putting down, you could get a fresh tranny from them for around 700 and that is with warranty. I went with a street fighter and it is now behind my 306 which is close to 400 hp and no problems, knock on wood. Anyways, the difference a new tranny makes is amazing, and the shifts are firm and consistent with a nice 1st to 2nd chirp when your hard on the gas. My .02

you could buy the Haynes C4 manual and a rebuild kit for maybe $150, then rebuild it yourself on a Saturday. You'll save lots of money and learn something new.

I just drove it today again and at first it was shifting....only got to 2nd...since I didn't want to drive it far. Then after make a loop a couple of times it stopped shifting...never got out of first gear. Not sure what the problem is. I don't have the time to rebuild it unfortunately, I'd love to do that. The car is at my fathers at the moment and that's 4 hours from here.

At all costs I would try and rebuild it. Go and take the tranny out and bring it home. My tranny cost me 430 in parts including the shipping and tons of mods. It also holds tons more HP than the TCI unit. Other than that, I don't fore see a budget outlet in your future. :D
