i have no idea how to drain the old trans fluid out and put some new good fluid in that will hopefully smoothen up the shifts, its probably time to change it anyways.. can someone give me direction on how to do this..or should i leave it up to a shop. thanks

Nah, I think you should do it yourself.

You drop the transmission pan to drain the fluid, there is no drain plug. The exhaust pipes are very close there so wait a while for them to cool a bit.

You will possibly find a weird plug in the pan, this is from the assembly line and can be discarded. If you find this plug it means you are the first to drop the pan.

No gasket is required on the pan.

If you want to get fancy, remove the drain plug from the TC and drain that as well.

Replace the filter.

At 61k you absolutely need to change the fluid.

Get your transmission fluid from the Ford Parts Counter.

Whelp he's got a stick so there IS a drain plug.

Get yourself a 3/8 rachet with a short extension. Crawl under the car and on the tranny bottom there will be a square 3/8 plug. Pull that out and it will drain the fluid out.

Reinstall the plug with some teflon tape.

On the passenger side of the tranny is another square 3/8 plug. That is the fill plug.

You can runa tube from the engine compartment down to the fill hole and fill it that way.

I don't remeber how much fluid it takes. I think 3.2 quarts?

steveb24,
if you ever thought about changing to an aftermarket shifter, now would be a good time. You can easily re-fill the transmission though the open shifter hole. Since you have a Tremec 3650, change the fluid yourself, and re-fill with 3.0L (3.2 quarts) after draining the old fluid as per SilverGTV8's post. I didn't have to use Teflon tape on the drain plug on mine though as he suggested. I used DEXRON III fluid in mine with good results; others here may suggest Royal Purple or similar products instead.
